Thing is with BH, and you will see it after being here a while, that certain topics tend to get brought up again after a while, and threads can sometimes get out of hand.... many of the older member will have seen the same topics discussed over and over.
You are VERY entitled to start any thread you like, on any topic you like (well within reason, you get my point!).... even if its been done before.... just be prepared that sometimes you might get a remark from older members, that its a topic thats been brought up.... please don't take it to heart.
FWIW I leave my boys in the car.... I live country, and go to a local servo, where I am more than comfortable for them to stay in the car.
That said, I also leave them in the car while I run into the local supermarket, post office, milk bar, and butchers DS1 whinges at me all the time, that I never get him out of the car to go into the shops!!!

The same thing happens with jerry cans actually. People lean right in close over them and then when it fills up quickly it all spurts out the top. I'm paranoid now when I fill jerry cans. Seen it happen to so many people. Straight in the eyes.

I use to take DS1 in with me. Since I've had two I either fill up when there is another adult in the car (my Mum or hubby usually) or I go our at night / weekend and fill up.

I ALWAYS put my own need to get in and out quickly before my childrens safety. thats just the kind of mother I am.
actually i beleive the risks of either scenario are pretty even, and I normally choose to do what seems safest in each individual scenario. its not at all safe in some petrol stations to take my toddler with my, espec. now im so heavily pregnant and he is a runner. if there are stupid drivers around i get a bit freaked out about carrying him. also if he is asleep i wont wake him as he is a dead weight and i physically can not haul around 15 kg of child right now.
sometimes it is unsafe to leave him. if its very hot, busy, the pump is too far away etc.
i weigh up each scenario.
in an ideal world i would never even put my own petrol in, and send dp to do it, but realistically this just doesn't work, one of us pretty much ALWAYS has ds and we rarely seem to be home at the same time except later in the evening.

I always get dh to do it or try get mum in the car when I need petrol! My reason is cos dd absolutely HATES the car so both scenarios (leave in the car or take in) are terrible! If i left her in the car she would scream the place down and when i do take her in, she screams when i put hr back in the car! So for me avoiding it altogether is an easier option!

With two kids I always got them out. Always. Never ever thought about leaving them in the car. Ds1 (4) would walk and I'd carry DS2 (2). I'd deal with the trantrums for chocolates or ice creams etc. I'd struggle one handed, get them back in the car and strapped up with the impatient ever glaring person behind me staring me down etc. Or else I'd fill up when my ex was in the car.
Now I'm single and have 3 kids. Trying to get 3 kids out, inside without destroying the place and back in the car is a mission. DS1 (4) is ok... but DS2 (2) still needs to be held and I can't hold him and DS3 (5 weeks) and swipe a card at the same time. It just doesn't work. I've had to start doing what I always hated. Leaving them in the car. I park at the pump closest to the windows/door of the servo, leave the windows down a smidge, lock the doors, wait for the queue to be either empty or low and then bolt there and back. I absolutely hate doing it... but sometimes you just have to make do with what you have.

I always fill up then move my car right up near the door to the servo..as close as I can get lol then wind the window down a lil bot n lock the car n basically only take my eyes off it to do my card!
