Which part?

That fertility specialists have higher rates of multiple births?

Or that private hospitals have older mothers?

E.g., private hospitals tend to have mothers with an 'older' average age, and also more that are overweight (not sure why - perhaps related to age?) - both of which are factors likely to increase the need for intervention. As a PP said, they also take more 'difficult' cases.

So, you're saying that private hospitals don't tend to have an older patient demographic? And that private hospitals don't tend to have a patient demographic that is more overweight than that of public hospitals? And that private hospitals don't take more difficult cases?

I have to disagree with you there (obviously, as you are disagreeing with my original statement).

For the NWP (which is the hospital we are discussing here), most of the obstetricians are specialists under QFG, and a large number of their patients have been treated there for fertility issues first, before continuing to see that same FS/ OB throughout their pregnancy.

My FS/ OB (at the NWP) doesn't take new patients who he hasn't first seen for fertility treatment.

Couples requiring fertility treatment often tend to be older, and with a higher rate of presentation of health issues (which may or may not include weight related issues).

2 separate obstetricians at the NWP have told me that their patient demographic is just that.

No, I'm not debating that at all. Your stating that age/weight etc etc etc is the reason private hospitals have a higher intervention/c/s rate which is not true. They have a higher intervention rate regardless of these things.

I didn't say that the other factors (e.g., age/ fertility issues/ health problems) were the sole cause, and I accept that even without them private hospitals do still have higher intervention rates.

But I also feel we are going a bit OT here! I'd suggest a spin-off, but I think this one has been done a number of times already.

I am sorry you had a poor experience at NWPH

I had 2 excellent experiences having babies there (through Dr Sheahan) and have had 7 other friends who have had wonderful experiences (1 with Dr T, 2 with Dr Sheahan, 2 with Dr Price and 1 with another obs whose name escapes me right now....) all have gone back to have second, third etc babies there.

It's sad that not everybody could have the same...... But I'm sure every hospital (public and private) has its share of negative experiences.....

OT maybe, but I had my first child there when I was 21, and a healthy BMI. More than One nurse commented to me that I was the youngest patient by far, and that the majority of obstetric patients at NWPH are 30+ and alot are overweight. Both times I had babies there I was the only obstetrics patient under 25...... Totally anecdotal but my paediatrician (who practices both publicly and privately) said that NWPH has much much older average maternal age, and a much higher maternal BMI than say the RBWH.....

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience OP.

I'm another who can't fault NWP at all. They were fantastic from start to finish! I had a natural drug free birth and throughout my prenatal appts my ob pushed natural birth and the midwives are absolutely fantastic!!

I have had 8 friends give birth there and haven't heard a bad story or ob (we all had different ones) yet.

I'm another one with only good things to say about NWP. I've seen dr price twice and would go to him again in a heartbeat. I have friends who ave seen dr Sheehan and dr Watson multiple times and again only have positive things to say.

I too had a fabulous experience at NWPH. I was with DR Titiz. He was lovely. He delivered my son. Midwives fantastic. Lactation consultants terrific.
I had a natural birth without drugs. I couldn't asked for more.

I was another unlucky patient of Tuicolo. It's so strange that there is such a divide in people's experiences with him. I don't think it's down to a personality clash either because I lost a 20 week baby where he was my ob. I had had three c sections prior to this pregnancy and when we found out our baby had passed, his response was that I should just go home and "wait for it to pass". So yeah I guess he's all for natural birth if that's what floats your boat....

It ended up as a surgery and the chromosome abnormality had a small chance of me developing a cancer so they needed to test the placenta. Surgery was on Friday morning, placenta was tested and I was dying for the results, he filed the results and buggered off for the weekend.

This was 9 years ago now and it's still hard to relive and I can only hope he's retired now. As for nwph, it's just not personally my cup of tea anymore. I've been there 4 times from 2009-2015 so I've had a lot of time there and each time got a little worse (mostly in terms of staff, I barely saw anyone but there were also some nasty midwives but I realise this can happen anywhere). But I personally now prefer to be in a bigger hospital as I've found better staff numbers, it could just be psychologically I feel more looked after in the bigger place.
