Default How far in advance do you need to book into a public hospital for a dating scan?

    Hi all,

I am about 5 weeks pregnant but am a little unsure on dates. The Dr I saw told me to come back in 4 weeks last week (so at about 8 weeks) and she would give me a referral to the antenatal clinic at my local public hospital (Westmead). She didn't fill me with confidence and didn't seem to be the slightest bit interested (probably wasn't) nor offer any advice.

I didn't think much of it, but now I'm wondering if I get the referral at 8 weeks, how long will it take to book into a public hospital for a dating scan/first antenatal consultation? Will it take a few days or weeks even? I was hoping to have the first consultation/dating scan at 8 weeks and I just don't know how busy they get as this is my first pregnancy.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers

    Hi

For both my dating scans i had an antenatal appointment at 5/6 weeks and got a dating scan done that day.
Im high risk and have "a very poor obstetric history" as they say. Ive never booked one myself ive always had a doctor call up for me to ask for an urgent scan.

Sorry it doesnt really help, depending on your first appointment at ur hospital could u do it that way? Or is it too much of a wait?

It took me no time to get booked in. It was mainly trying to find a time that would fit mine and my husband's schedule rather than the hospital. Now, booking into the Antenatal clinic and booking in to give birth is another story. I was told right before my 12 week scan to book into the hospital and got a letter saying I had to fill out paperwork but they couldn't promise me a spot yet. They also said it generally takes 9 weeks to get an appointment with the midwife, though I know I can see my GP until I am 24 weeks (don't know if that is individually based or a standard). This is in Canberra, so may be different where you are.

My public hospital did not do dating scans infact they did not do any scans at all. I had to organise all mine through my gp or ob later on and I paid for them then got partial refunds through medicare.

When I thought I was 5 weeks pregnant, I was actually 7 weeks according to the dating scan.. If u know ur last period start date, then the pregnancy week should be quite accurate.. However I'd u didn't then, u will need a dating scan, usually just to confirm the date.. Any ultrasound places should b able to so dating scan with a doctors referral , u don book into hospital for that.. Doctors in Australia dun seem to care much for early pregnancy because it is still unstable.. It is quite quick to get a date depending on the practice and if it is crowded.. U dun get to c anyone at the hospital until 16 weeks .. I got a referral for hospital at week 7, that was like in august and the first appointment is in November with the hospital, just for paperwork and for booking in... At week 7, my gp gave me referral for week 12 ultrasound.. That's about it.. Not much info given about what to expect n I got most of my info from this forum..

I was told when I rang the Hospital that they won't see you until you are about 12 or 13 weeks along. So till then, you probably need to book all your dating scans and blood tests through the GP. I went to the GP at 4 week and also got told to come back in 3 weeks and then did my dating scan when I was 7 weeks along and the GP needs to give you referral to Hospital.

    good luck with it.

Just make sure you organise your "dating scan" before 12 weeks.. medicare doesn't cover a "dating scan" after 12 weeks so you'll be out of pocket
