Default How often do you move in the DF?

Im curious how often someone might be required to move in the Navy? Every couple of years? less/more?

Career path would be kitchen or medical.

    Big thanks

I would say to a certain extent it is up to the individual.
Most posting are based in Sydney, so if you arn't from here then a move to Sydney and then you could potentially stay here or move every few years (cook) or staying in sydney forever (medic)

    hih

Depends on a lot of things....my DH is in the navy & we are in Cairns (this is our 2nd move here) we left here 2.5yrs ago (by Choice) and came back...

Postings is every 2-3 years but that doesnt mean that you will move interstate - it could be to sea if you are ashore or vice versa....

Medical you will have to move away if you did a sea posting cause there are no medics on small ships....which is all Cairns has.

As a cook as you apporoach a more senior rank, you will have to go south to do a sea posting also...but there is no reason why you shouldnt be able to spend 6-8 yrs in Cairns as cook on the priviso that put you here first up...

What do you mean it could be to sea? You can get posted to sea?

A Sea Posting means you are asigned to a ship/boat...so yes you go to sea.

Ashore Posting means you stay at the base & work but can always be called up to do "OP RELIEF" which if a chef or Medic (whatever you are in the navy) is unavailable to go to sea (death in family/sickness/not medically fit) you can be sent in their place.

    Hope this makes sense

I don't know about a cook or medic .. how often they move .. but re high school .. i think kids have more solid friendships and i think that's the hardest thing. We are facing high school next year and hopefully we wont move for another few years but really don't think so. My kids in primary school have dealt well with leaving friends but high school ... friendships are stronger and not so flakey. School work wise .. you can get tutoring upon a posting to cope with any loss.

From my experience with my sister & her ex-DH who I am still friends with ( he is a former Navy cook & is now a Medic LOL ! ) its every few years you get a posting & there are the options of where you go so to speak but they can be limited also. Plus there are sea postings ( you are put on a ship but that doesnt mean the family necessarily moves it all depends ! ) which have to be done a certain amount of times at various intervals ...

As you become more senior & have served a longer term you have more say in a lot of things.
