Default Looking for a new Doctor

    Hello,

My partner and I are expecting a baby early next year.

We are looking for a good doctor who can do the checkups & referrals (first ultrasound then 12 week ultrasound)

We are unsure of who to go to as we do not want just any old doctor.

    helps!

Where do you live? and you only want a GP not Obstetrician?

    Hi

I decided to find a local doctor that I was happy with so I could keep seeing them after I had the baby. That way you can find one that you like who you can see for the whole pregnancy and they can get to know you. Finding someone who is nearby and has an established practice is a good idea. I decided that I would be more comfortable with a woman and had to hunt around a bit with the yellow pages. The only way to check them out is to make and appointment.

My GP refered my for blood tests to confirm the pregnancy and then was able to refer me for an ultrasound. When they give you a referal you will get a list of the locations (I see you are in WA so you will probably be refered to SKG like I was). The specialist there will then interpret the results of the ultrasound and send it back to your doctor with the pictures.

If you decide to see an obstetrician your doctor will give you a referal - if you don't know who you want to go to they have a book so they can look up who is in your area. You would then see the obstetrician at about 10 or 12 weeks and they would handle all of your scans and see you from then on. If you are going to go private get in fast because there is a shortage of obstetricians in Perth and you need to book quickly.

If you are going to go public your GP can send you for your 12 week scans and you would probably have your first appointment at the hospital at 19 - 21 weeks to get things rolling and would see the midwives at specified points after that for all other care.

Good luck and enjoy this fun and exciting time.
