    Default Hormones - VITEX

    Hi
Im 34 years old and my last 2 periods have been messed up. I went to the dr because i had veins in my areola and white bumps on them also and was spotting and in a lot of pain. The dr was surprised as she thought i could be pregnant but i told her that i had severe pains so she ruled that out. and said that it was a hormone imbalance. It definitely ended up just being my period not pregnancy. I got bloods done and my FSH level was at 9.

I have always been right on track to the day with my period except these last 2 months. Im on a 28 day cycle. I went off the pill in June 2008. I heard about VITEX for hormone imbalance, which i think the imbalance has something to do with me putting on about 6kgs in 4/5 months. this is my first month on vitex i am on cycle day 15 today. I have been taking 2 tablets i think added up to 2000mg a day.Im also taking royal jelly, 2 tablets but have decreased to 1 tablet in both vitex and royal jelly. So many confusing stories of when to stop taking vitex, i am thinking i should take it up until pregnancy and maybe reduce it to 1 every second day during the first trimester and ween myself off it all together. should i continue taking the Royal Jelly while pregnant? Any information/advice on vitex would be good. Or if you know of a vitamin which can bring my FSH down? Thanks so much Kylie

    Hi there Kylie,

Thanks for you questions! Very important considerations and this is precisely why I don´t recommend self prescription, although I do congratulate you on being proactive and seeking help for your situation.

The first thing that must be addressed is the cause of the problem and the reason you have put on 6kg in 4/5 months… Many questions must be asked here—such as what are you stressed about? What are you trying to protect yourself from? (Interstingly rapid weight gain in some cases relates to the need of protection on some level). What is your diet and lifestyle like and it is contributing to hormonal balance, the health of your egg and the development of the healthiest possible baby?

Then after these questions have been answered and solutions found and implemented then and only then should we part towards oral treatment and supplementation (however never self-prescription, treatment by a competent and qualified health care professional that specialises in herbal medicines such as a herbalist or naturopath is essential for optimum treatment.

Too much vitex can suppress the pituitary gland and also contribute to hormonal imbalances. The ideal dose is absolutely no more than 1000mg daily throughout the cycle and for some of my patients this continues throughout the preconception period and until approximately 14 weeks gestation. At this time they are then weaned off it.

I do not recommend royal jelly for anyone TTC, it can be allergenic and may create an ´over-reaction´ of the immune system, which can even lead to miscarriages.

In regards to decreasing your FSH levels there are many herbal medicines that are very effective however for a prescription you do need to consult a practitioner to see what is relevant and necessary in your current situation.
