Default Producing milk just thinking about a baby??

    Hi there,

We are currently deciding if we want a baby together (we have 2 each). We will need IVF as my husband has had a vasectomy. I would love a baby, he is still deciding.

I figured that I would get myself ready health wise anyway (no harm done even if we don't). So have been being generally healthy, charting my cycles and taking vitamins.

I am also producing milk - quite a bit, seems to happen most in my luteal phase, for example right now - on day 19 of my cycle, I can feel them 'letting down' and they are leaking a little, without even touching them. If I squeeze them even a fraction - milk comes out.

I breastfed my children - but they are now 8 and 10 and this has only just happened for the last 3 months. Funnily enough - I had trouble expressing with them... and while I don't want to try (don't want to encourage it) I think I could express milk now!

I've seen my doctor, who was convinced I was PG (even though dh has had vasectomy), when the test was neg, she did swabs and blood tests, my prolactin was normal.

She says maybe I just really want a baby... it all sounds a bit too far fetched to me... what do you think??

    Hi Suze,

Fascinating developments!!! I would have thought high prolactin or psychosomatic symptoms... given your prolactin was normal at a particular time of day—just to be sure I’d perhaps try another test at other times of day and perhaps of the month to rule out a ‘false negative’/normal (prolactin).

I would not rule out your doctor’s comment about ‘mind over matter’—I’ve seen it too often to ignore it. However, here are some other reasons why this could happen too, which you can investigate further:
    1)‘Excessive’ breast gland stimulation—foreplay?
2)Medications—Are you taking any medications that can create an imbalance in your reproductive hormones?
3)Benign pituitary growth—Despite the normal prolactin which is a sign of this, could it still be happening? An MRI/CT scan could be useful (just in case?)
4)Mammary duct ectasia—although mostly occurring in women in their 40s and 50s this is mostly a ‘silent’ non-serious condition that creates breast discharge similar to breast milk when the milk duct beneath the nipple becomes blocked or clogged. This often goes away without treatment but sometimes may require antibiotics or possibly surgery to remove the affected milk duct.

I hope these suggestions give you some more ideas of further investigations you can do or ‘get done’. I’d love an update from you as well!
