Question Can you help- need to hear from you

    Hello...

We are doing our home-work early and would like to hear any feed back or further recommendations on Private hospitals in or around Melbourne or from St Vincents Private?

Even if you have or had a great Ob- would be great to hear from you.

We had a terrible experience with our last pregnancy So we definitely wanting a complete change this time round.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi
Hope you have a much better experience this time! I went to St Vincents Private 2 years ago for a c/s with my little boy. He was born at 34 weeks after a very difficult pregnancy. He spent 3 weeks in scn and hasn't looked back since. I had a great experience, we couldn't fault them at all. I've read about the food not being great but for the life of me I can't remember what it was like - had to much else going on - it was just fuel for the journey. We have a brilliant OB who has continued to be fantastic - Guy Skinner. We can't speak highly enough of him - his care in all aspects has been great. Don't think I would have been brave enough to have another go if I didn't have such great support and belief from him. Good Luck, hope to be back there soon too!

Thank you for your reply xmansmummy-much appreciated.

Great to hear you had such a lovely experience at SVPH and that all is well now with your little boy too.

As long as the food is hot- I am really not too fussy, like you said its only fuel for the journey (great to look at things in such positive light). We are looking at and hoping for a supportive and friendly staff this time round, from birth to breast feeding, as we never received this from our twins birth. Very sad.

xmansmummy- Thanks also for the info on your Ob too, will look into it.

Big hugs- you have been very helpful

    Hi there,

I too am a huge Guy Skinner fan he has delivered all 3 of our girls and has been a brilliant obs can't speak highly enough of him my husband and I love him!!!!

I went to Freemasons for all 3 of my deliveries it too is a brilliant hospital amazing restaurant style food ...... nothing like sitting up having a beautiful meal and glass of wine with your husband to celebrate the birth of your bubba!! And the midwives are all amazing too can't speak highly enough about them either. They also have a night nursery and are happy to take your baby for you so you can get a good block of sleep. They would take my DD about 10pm after the last feed and the bring her back in about 2am so I got at least one good solid sleep and they midwives that run the nursery are just lovely. DD2 was in SCN and they too were amazing so kind and caring and happy to spend time with you whenever you needed that extra bit of help. And with breastfeeding I would just call on my midwife each time I fed so I knew I was attaching properly and they were always happy to help without being too pushy!

PM me if you would like anymore info or if you would like Guy's phone number

    All the best

    Hello Lissa7.

Your feed back has been much needed.

I was actually looking at Freemasons or SVPH as my two first choices but hadn't really heard much about Freemasons, till I read your reply. It's nice to hear some positives!

Thank you for sharing your story of your girls birth; great to know the MW's are helpful with b/f and don't mind looking after the baby while you get some .

I have heard that some Private hospitals don't encourage you to be away from baby- but I think, a few hours of good solid sleep would make the world of difference.

And the food (restaurant quality...mmm) and wine sound lovely- what better way to celebrate the newest member of the family.

A few questions, if you don't mind-

Does your Ob work from Freemasons; is that where his specialist rooms are?

And one other thing are the rooms at Freemasons private or shared and can DH stay the night/s?

    Thanks lots

His rooms are across the road so he is never far away when you need him, I will PM you his address and phone number

In all 3 of my visits I have had a private room with Queen bed and yes the husbands are very welcome to stay and can eat with you at anytime! There is also the option of going to the Park Hyatt which is apparenty beautiful if your obs agrees that it's okay for you to but I felt more comfy at Freemasons.

Also I think Freemasons is one of the last hospitals left where they do take your baby at night to give you a rest.

I'm sure if you go with them you will not be disappointed I honestly can't recommend them enough and Guy Skinner is amazing so kind, caring and willing to listen any time of day or night when you need him. His midwives that work with him are also beautiful ladies and are always happy to help and answer any questions that you may have over the phone.

All the best, happy to help more if I can

I had a bad experience last time and have swapped to Guy Skinner this time and his is fantastic. I am only 30 weeks but he has been very supportive and was really good whilst helping me to conceive this bub and we had fertility issues and has remained fantastic all the way through. A friend just had her first bub with him and she had only good things to say.

As for hospitals I went to Freemasons with DD and am booked with St Vincents this time. Freemasons have increased their intake numbers and are very busy so it can be hard to get good support (don't be surprised if you have to wait 30mins - 1 hour to get an answer to a buzzer if they are busy). They also sorely let me down with breastfeeding and things that happened after the birth (DD was C/S). I was told by a midwife to go to St Vincents and I spoke to a woman who had bubs at both and she said if you want a nice room and food go to Freemasons, if you want better care go to St Vincents. I haven't been a patient at St V's yet so I don't know but have had good recommendations from ladies who have had bubs there.

Yes Freemasons has a 'well nursery' where you can put bub at night so if this is something really important to you Freemasons will need to be your choice as St Vincents don't have one they only have a nursery for bubs who are sick, need a little extra help.

    Good luck making your decision

    Hi Kaiahsmum
Such a shame you had a bad experience at Freemasons.
I had wonderful help and support from the midwives all 3 of my visits there. Can't speak highly enough about the place!
Hope all goes well with you this time and you enjoy your stay at St.V's

Thanks so much again Lissa7- been a great help and yes I got the info you sent via PM. I am still new to all this, so I hope you rec my message back via PM, okay too.

It is definitely out of Freemasons or St Vincents Private, I am so glad we have narrowed it down to only 2 hospitals now

Thank you also to Kiahsmum for your honesty about Freemasons. I really appreciated it. I really do hope you have a better experience next time also. I didn't know any thing about the 'well Nursery', so that is some thing I will be looking into also.

I suppose every one is going to have different views and experiences (like alot of things in life- I suppose), but some times I wished I had a crystal ball this time round, to see what is best for us...

But all we can do for now, is continue on with our home work (lol) and go with what feels right. I think having a gut feeling on where to go and who to see, is all part of making that final decision also.

Do both hospitals have ante-natal classes for 2nd time round pregnancies and tours etc? Maybe I will have to call them and they can send out an info pack- that's if they have packs to send out, that is.

    Thanks girls once again.
