With regards to the safety net you do have to "register" so that all the expenses for the people on the same card combine so when they jointly hit the threshold you get the 80% back. If you dont you will have to have that amount of expenses just yourself.

Just to add to what everyone else has said - last years tax if you spent over $1500 in any medical expenses you could claim on your tax. The amount spent is going up this year i think from memory to $2500. Come tax time go into medicare and your health fund and they will provide you with a print out to take in to your tax person [ you can order the print outs on line too].
Also if you are with GMHBA when you have the baby you get back a $500 bonus and your ob should know about this and it is automatically done for you - as GMHBA dont give as much back on returns as other funds when having a baby they give you back a nice little baby bonus about 10weeks after bubs is born.

Yeah, they have changed the amount you can get back for obs management fees. I paid about $2600 and got $400 back. That was after I reached the safety net, which I didn't need to register for, Medicare keep records of all the claims you make in the year and give it to you automatically when you reach the amount.

Ok ok so now I am freaking out!!! I am going private... Filled in the firms at the hospital etc but I have been told that there is no excess and no out of pocket exp for hospital stay. I do have the 70 consult fee each visit and claim these back every couple of visits.
