Default Can an obstetrician refuse to treat you?

    Hi there

I am a pretty big girl (about 130kgs) and i have an ob who i went to with my first daughter.

I am heavier now, i know that, and i am actively trying to loose weight now while we are TTC.

Im worried that if i did fall pregnant that the ob i want would refuse me based on weight.

    Can they do that?

It would be the Wesley Hospital- so does anyone know about that at all?

    Thanks in advance....

    STM

Yes, they can. Given that they work in private practice, and pay for their own indemnity insurance, they can refuse to take patients on (or put conditions on taking them on) based on their perceived risk for mum and bub, and therefore risk of litigation if something goes wrong.

    Wow well there you go!
You'd question their capabilities if they had problems taking an overweight woman on though.

Best of luck with everything STM

Some of the private obs will refuse because the private hospitals where they work (some of which are small) have policies that don't allow women in certain risk categories.

And some doctors can just refuse to see you for absolutely no good reason at all. If they don't like the cut of your coat, they can just say no. Don't get me started on this though.

Yes they can but while you may not be accepted to birth centres or private hospitals public mainstream maternity hospitals and there OB's have an obligation to treat you and cannot turn you away (unless they are totally full up LOL).

Could you check with the Wesley whether you would be accepted by them?

Private OB's can, yes. As Tam said, based on their perception of risk for their indemnity insurance.
Public OB's/ Public hospitals - can't refuse to treat anyone.

Unfortunately you can be refuse treatment by any ob or hospital.
My local hospital will not except a pregnant woman with a high 'body mass index' (BMI), they are a category 2 hospital.
In this case a pregnant woman would be sent to a category 3 hospital that could cope better if there was an emergency.

Why don't you start to look into it now, make a few calls (your ob/hospital) and see where you stand

for a coming your way soon
