    Default IVF FET and breastfeeding

    Hi ladies,

Was just wondering if anyone knows if bf would effect a FET? When i spoke to the receptionist at the obstetrician i had for my first bub, she said you cant undergo IVF whilst bf, but if im not going to be taking any drugs, just a straight forward transfer, then would it matter? Maybe hormones or something? Would they or anything else effect our chances of it being successful? Ill have to call her back to confirm but was just curious if anyone knows anything about this.

Our last step is to call the fertility centre when i get my next period which should be in about a week and a half but ive only just found out this information and am currently bf my 16 month old DS, but only early morning feed.

    Thanks in advance
    Jodes

I had to be fully weaned for a few months before my clinic would attempt an FET. It's due to prolactin which is responsible for milk supply, there is evidence to suggest that elevated prolactin levels can affect the ability of the embie burrowing in.

I've just had 2 failed FETs and despite not BF since Oct last year, when AF arrived after my 2nd FET I actually checked my breasts and was able to express a couple of drops of milk. I'm due for another FET this week but seeing my FS Monday arvo because of this concern (and discussing maybe going to blasto) so I'll have some better info for you Monday night!

Wow, thanks for that info, i had no idea!! I cant believe you still have milk 6 months later..damn, i might have to put off this FET for a bit. So can they do a blood test to check prolactin levels to see if they're too high? Good luck tomorrow!

jodestar21 - I am not sure about the whole IVF thingy as I am new to this. But, when I had to have radioactive iodine treatment for cancer my son had to be weened 5-6 months before hand as it can uptake in the breast due to prolactin.

To be honest I imagine it would infact effect transfer. However, one of my girlfriends fell pregnant while breastfeeding no worries and has a healthy baby girl from that time.

Check with your clinic, you don;t want to watse a precious embie if the chances are low.

Thanks Living IN Hope, i contacted my FS today, just waiting for them to call me back. I definately dont want to risk losing an embie just for the sake of waiting a month or two. This is something i hadnt even thought about befire my sister mentioned it. So glad she did now!

I know, I find it amazing that there's still milk too! I wouldn't think DD could get a feed from me but just the fact that there's still milk I think is remarkable!

I spoke to my FS about this but now I'm confused... I'm sure it was a nurse that told me that it may influence the ability to burrow in but then my FS said that elevated prolactin can affect ovulation... which is why as a general rule it is more difficult for 'fertile' couples to conceive when exclusively breastfeeding. Of course it's possible it's just that the chances are lower because ovulation and other hormones are still a bit wacky.

IVF doesn't like wacky hormones, they like to be in control of everything, so whilst they might be interested in something like elevated prolactin, in my case because all of my other hormones were super dooper he wasn't really concerned about the possibility of elevated prolactin. He still sent me to path for a BT and I'm sure had it come back high he would've put me on meds...

... but that doesn't matter now, none of my embies survived the thaw today so no transfer for me this time.

I know a little about breastfeeding (B/F)I guess becasue you can use B/F as a method of contraception but only if fully b/f but as you explained it is only a morning feed so it shouldn't affect your FET but I guess they just like to have every just so for any ivf procedures

    Hope this helps
but just confrim with you fert specialisit

Oh Fizz - im so sorry none survived the thawing this time..im scared of that too as we only have 2 left. Do you have more available? How many? Thanks so much for your info.

Karen - thank you too. I really wish i didnt have to give up this last feed as its such a nice little bonding and cuddle time, but ive rang the clinic back and my gyno/obst and both have said you cant bf while undergoing IVF, even for a FET...damn it!!!

I have to put it off for now anyway. My gyno wants me to do some hormone tests before proceeding. Ah well....soon

Thanks again everyone for all your advice and assistance. It has been much appreciated and good luck to everyone trying..it can be a hard road at times, but a very worthwhile one x
