Default 6th IVF cycle, losing hope ?need donor eggs

This is my first time on a forum and I'm worried that people will think I'm a snob if I don't use smilies. I'm having my 6th egg collection today and I'm feeling more fragile than usual. My husband and I have been talking about egg donation late next year, so maybe that's the reason. I'm also following straight on from a failed cycle in October.

This is my 11th round of fertility treatment (3 AI, 5 fresh, 2 frozen - one where blastocyst didn't defrost). Does anyone else count all the cycles, even the ones that had no chance of sucess? I have PCOS and spent a week in hospital with hyperstimulation with my first IVF round - but I was much more upset about having to freeze our one blastocyst (which didn't defrost). I had a laparoscopy in August and had my ovaries diathermied. My doctor also found mild endometriosis, one blocked tube and one damaged tube and a couple of adhesions. I guess the AI cycles were never going to work anyway.

I'm struggling with knowing when to give up hope. My doctor has confirmed that the chances are small that it will work out. From what I can see, most of the women my age who completely fail IVF have premature ovarian failure or have eggs which don't fertilize. I tend to have lots of eggs and make good numbers of embryos (usually 6 - 9) but the quality isn't great. So far, I've had 4 blastocysts and 4 day 3 embryos transferred. This time I'm doing blastocyst transfer, taking metformin and having clexane and steroids. If this doesn't work, next time I'll probably try a day 2 transfer.

I was really disappointed after my last cycle. When I went for my first scan, there was a corpus luteum, so I'd ovulated for the first time. I was having acupuncture 2/3 times a week and taking vile, expensive chinese herbs and metformin. My doctor thought my egg quality may have been improved by the diathermy, but the embryos did what they always do. We had 7 embryos, only one making it to blastocyst stage and that one had been a bit slow to grow. We had the PGD done and found that 2 were abnormal, 2 genetically normal but didn't grow past 5 cells and the blastocyst was probably normal - but they couldn't view all the chromosomes. I saw my acupuncturist/chinese med doctor 6 days after embryo transfer and she told me I had a pregnant pulse. My breasts had swollen more than usual and I was convinced I was pregnant even though the very-early preg tests kept coming up negative. I must have known I was kidding myself, because I wasn't too surprised when the blood test was negative.

I'm sick of taking the vile chinese herbs, but am feeling a lot of pressure to "try everything" and don't want to have any doubts in myself. I'm going to carry on with the acupuncture - at least there's an evidence base for this. Does anyone have any advice about herbs/natural medicine?

I'm starting to think that I may need donor eggs. I think that after this cycle I'll do 2 or 3 more. Has anyone here fallen pregnant on their 8th or more IVF round? Is it selfish to start looking for a donor before I've finished with IVF? I don't want to take a potential donor away from a couple who are ready now, but I know it would be easier to finish with trying my own eggs if I had another option on the way? What do people think?

I'll let you know how this cycle goes. Hopefully, I won't end up with hyperstimulation again. 3 days ago, I had 14 large follicles and about 10 smaller ones.

Oh you poor thing, you're doing it tough at the moment! I wish you luck with your egg collection.

I can't really help with the drugs that you're on. I was on gonal-f and towards the end a drug called luveris which helped with egg quality. I use to get quite a few eggs too (between 13 & 21 in the 13 or so EPU's I had). Our fertilisation rate was pretty good, so I can't help there either, but I couldn't not fall pregnant!!

I tried the vile herbs as well, acupuncture, detox .... aaahhh the list goes on, and on, and on. On my last two tries I took low dose asprin, personally, I think that's what did the trick for me.

What I can help with is ... It took us around 30 attempts before our BFP. And yes, we all count our cycles (until you get over 25 anyway, then you stop, sort of). IVF is not always a short quick road unfortunately. Just because you haven't cracked it yet, doesn't mean you won't.

Do you have faith in your FS?? If you have, then be guided by their experience. Maybe push them for a few more answers, or maybe they know about another drug? Talk to your clinic about donor eggs ... do they think you should be considering that yet?

You haven't said your age but I was 2 mths off being 39 when I finally fell (I'm 40 now). I wanted to be sure that I tried everything before I gave up. I didn't want to get to 45 and wonder "What if I'd tried ... ?" I see by the post time that you're possibly losing sleep over this - we all have at some time - it sucks doesn't it?! Sometimes you get some brilliant ideas at 3 in the morning ... like posting on this site, to get some well deserved support and encouragement!!

And by the way, you have to be in the mood to use the smilies ... I don't think your a snob. Hopefully soon your posts will be full of them!!

I really hope you're able to post your BFP at the end of this cycle.

Firstly, lots of to you. I can't imagine what you must be going through. It took us 17 cycles to get our BFP (and one m/c along the way). I also went down the accupuncture/chinese medicine route, and know exactly how vile they are. We used to refer to it as my 'dirt tea' - that's what it looked like, but it actually smelt more like manure! Anyway, I just wanted to say that I really do believe it worked for me. I got my BFP after two months of doing the chinese medicine thing. It may have been coincidence - I guess I'll never know. But I'll still recommend it to others because it worked for me.

to you sweetie im sorry to hear your story.
We have just gotten our first BFP after 2 full & 3 FET cycles this cycle was our last embryo & we took it to Blasto & also used Embryo Glue.
I have 3 children all by myself without IVF they are 10,14 & 17 there will be 11 years between this baby & my youngest due to having my tubed done in 2000.
IVF is more then a rollacoaster it is something that takes over your whole life it would have to be the hardest thing a woman could go through.
Stay strong because you will get your result you are longing for.
Hope all went well today pls let us know

So sorry you are feeling so down hun. Don't blame you at all, it can all get too much sometimes can't it ! I have my days where I wonder if "maybe it's just not meant to be" and days when I'm just soooo sick of EVERYTHING !

Yes, I do count my cycles, I think most people on here do. I'm up to 3 Fresh and 5 frozen with one BFP that resulted in miscarraige and the rest BFN's.

I am meant to have a FET this month, but have just found out I'm not ovulating and have not got thick enough lining, so going on provera and then clomid and then trying again.

I know it's easier said that done sweetie, but don't give up hope..... There are many, many ladies on here who have had HEAPS of goes and still got the elusive BFP at the end.

I certainly don't think there would be any harm in looking into the donor process, just in case if you think it will help you feel like there is an alternative option for you one day if you absolutely need it.

As Luck2B mum asked, do you trust your FS. I adore my specialist and totally trust that he will get me pregnant ONE DAY and that he is doing everything in his power to make it all happen for us.

Take care and know you are not alone in your frustrations.....the whole thing really does suck sometimes ! Sending lots of your way !

    Love Lucy X

PS. I don't "do" the smileys when I don't feel like it either and no-one on here would think you're a snob - they are truely the loveliest people here.

    Default Thanks for the support

    Hi everyone,

Your messages have made me feel much more positive. I forgot to say - I'm 32 and hubby is 36 our kitty-babies are 6,4 and 8 months. Egg pick-up went well yesterday - 18 eggs - probably not all mature. I'm just waiting until I can ring in to find out how many fertilized. So far no signs of hyperstim. Maybe this will be the one.

    Default very excited

Just found out we had 12 eggs fertilize. This is our best result ever. I really hope that one or two make it through to be good blastocysts - we usually lose a couple each day. I hate the waiting!!!!

    Hi everyone,
Things are looking good. Yesterday (day 2) we had 10 x 4 cells, 1x 3 cells and 1 x 2 cells. The 2 and 3 cells weren't very good quality. At this stage last month, we had 5 looking OK. I start the crinone + prednisone and clexane today. If there's one or two good blastocysts on Tuesday, maybe I can get hopeful again. It just feels like I've been here so many times before. My dh is on the Tony Ferguson diet and has lost 10 kgs. If this one doesn't work out, I'm going to take a few months off to get fit and focus on something else. I've only got about 5 kgs to lose, but I'm short (162 cm), so it makes a big difference.
    Take care everyone
