Hi everyone! I'm going to be applying to study Nursing/Midwifery full time, starting next year. I'm booked in to see my GP tomorrow to get any immunisations that I might need, can anyone tell me quickly which ones I need?

I recently had the whooping cough one with the tetanus booster (and I think diphtheria?), so that's all good, and I believe I need the Hep B one? Is that correct? Anything else?

Thanks. Very excited about all this, just trying to get organised ahead of time.

I began my Bach of Mid last year and had to get the following:

      > Diptheria, tetanus and pertussis
      > Hep B (3 doses over 6 months)
      > Measles, mumps, rubella (you can show you're covered by previous imms through a blood test, otherwise it's 2 doses a month apart)
      > Mantoux test / tuberculin status

There was also a longer list of recommended imms, which I didn't get. Pretty sure no one else did either I can pass that list on to you if you want though?

Personally I would leave the mantoux test / tuberculin status for now. It can be difficult to find a place that does them and from memory they're not cheap (could be wrong). I have heard that some uni's will actually organise testing on campus, too. Mine didn't and because I had such a hard time finding somewhere that did the mantoux test I ended up getting a simple blood test done at a local path place to check my tuberulin status. Much simpler, although again, only some path places do it. I preferred the blood test to the mantoux as the mantoux involves having a patch of skin tested for a reaction over a day or two. Blood test = much simpler IMO

Hope I haven't confused you! Good luck with everything, I hope you get in!!

          Hi there.

Thinking of applying next year (Bachelor of Midwifery) - first choice UTS (Sydney), but will also apply for Melbourne Unis and NSW coast. Just wondering if anyone knows approx how many people apply and how many people actually get in?
How big is a standard Midwifery class?

Ok, well I saw my GP, told her my plans and she ended up giving me the Hep B shot (with a follow up in a month and then again 5 months after that), and I have to go and find out from the council about the others (apart from pertussis/tetanus/diphtheria which I had a few months ago). DD got her 6 month shots too, boy did she scream! Poor love.

At monash they did it all on campus at the health centre- they did all the testing (well other than the blood ones, but they gave us the form to get that done at a pathology unit) and they did the mantoux test for us.

Was going to ask this too!

I'm hoping to apply for Bachelor of Midwifery starting Jan 2013... Very excited but have to sit STAT first!

                Loving this thread!!!

Same! I've read almost all midwifery threads to get information!
I definatly don't have my hopes up for getting into UTS though as I don't have any competitive qualifications! Just have to write an amazing personal statement and go good in the STAT test I guess Hmmm.

                    Great work!

I just posted my questions in the other thread and after reading this I honestly doubt I would get chosen should I wish to apply for nursing or midwifery...

I'd like to know too. Although do we do that after we apply if needed?

I'm wondering if there is anything I should be doing before applications open?? I'm not sure if there's much I can do at this stage apart from getting the Hep B immunisation which I'm doing.

                          Bump.

Just wondering if there's a way to find out our immunisation history....? Like do we go to Medicare or something? I've got some really old immunisation cards that my mum gave me, but I wonder if maybe there's a record on file with the government that lists all the immunisations we've had, like the record we can get for our kids.

I got mine from my Dr. They had it saved in their computer files. You can also get blood testing done to see what you still have immunity to and what you need boosters for.
STAT testing info will be out on VTAC once it opens I would assume. It usually is.

I am applying to do the uni prep course hopefully to get into the June-September one, this is meant to give me a 95% chance of getting into the course with the right CV and cover letter.

Can anyone tell me some things i should add into the cover letter or any other infomation that would better my chances of studying mid in 2013 ?/

                              thanks in advanced

I am doing what you are doing I start UC prep on the 26th June 2012 and hoping to get into the Bachelor or nursing at UC next year. I am 28 years old and hoping to get an ATAR (from UC prep) that will get me in. When I contacted the uni they told me I don't need a cover letter nor sit an STAT to get in as my marks and grades from the UC prep course will get me in.

This is absolutely phenomenal! I've been a midwife for about 16 years and we often get asked about the midwifery courses. It is terrific to know where people can study. With world wide shortage of midwives it is great that you are studying to enter this rewarding and blissful profession xo
