I believe they are bulk billed to encourage people to use it rather than clog up emergency rooms. If they charged what doctors normally charge out of hours it would probably be a disincentive due to cost.

Honestly, I would be fine paying a gap for me. But I think they should bulk bill children, pensioners and HCC holders (I think all doctors should).

I'm in two minds. I have used the service before I realised the insane amount of money they bill Medicare for... and the sneaky was they will often say oh has anyone else in the family been unwell.. and then bill them as well. Our health care system can't maintain that.. but then neither can our emergency rooms continue to deal with the garbage people turn up for. So very torn. I think it needs to stay, but the amount they bill Medicare for needs to be reduced and it needs to be more tightly regulated.

Yep, I completely agree Uniquey! In the exact same boat, they have been a life saver in so many circumstances when hubby is away!

I have used this numerous times. Infact i was so sick last christmas I could not get out of bed. Even if i was sick enough to go to the emergency ward, I could not have physically sat there for the multiple hours I would have had to wait. As it turns out it was a virus and not much could have been done, but it was good to have peace of mind. My elderly mother , in her 80's who is on a pension has been known to call them after hours too. It would be sad to see bulk billing end on a great service.

I work in this field and it's actually the doctors fault (some of them anyways) that the bulk billing may be stopped.

A lot of them are using the wrong item number, so they get a higher bulk billing fee.

For example. The standard bulk billing item number is worth $75, but people are using the emergency bulk billing item number to get the higher amount of $150.

The emergency one is only for ones where the health care provided could not have waited until normal hours. I.e it would be detrimental to the health of the patient to make them wait and the waist mwah results in the patient being hospitalised. Most after hours appointments don't actually meet that criteria.

The doctors are not skilled enough to make the proper assessment because they aren't specialist GP's (they are quite often actually medical officers from hospitals doing this to make some extra money).

I have no problem with them doing the public service by providing the healthcare but they are a lot of the time people who are only a few years out of med school and they are expected to be able to make an assessment that a trained specialist GP (who has had 3 years of specialist training) can.

Removing bulk billing isn't the best solution, they need to give the doctors the appropriate support to bill properly so that it doesn't cost the program excessive amounts of $$

I've used it a number of times. Once for myself over a long weekend, again for myself after DD was born and the 13health nurse was concerned about a DVT. And a couple of times for DS when he got sick in the afternoon and I couldn't get him a doctor's appointment within a reasonable time frame because they were booked out for the next 2 days. These things (with the exception of the DVT worry) didn't warrant an emergency room visit, but they did require medical attention sooner rather than later. Without the home doctor service, we probably would have had to go to the ER for something minor to stop it becoming something major. Bulk billing is crucial, because I know there are a lot of people who use it solely because the regular GPs don't bulk bill and they just can't afford to see a doctor otherwise. These people would either have to end up going to the hospital for treatment, or end up going without necessary treatment.

I haven't used the service yet, though I'm grateful that it exists. I have the magnets on my fridge with the phone numbers on them in case the need arises.

I think it should stay bulk billed, so I've signed the petition.

It is an amazing service, especially with young children not needing to take them to an after hours clinic at night or on the weekends, public holidays.

My son had tonsillitis on a Saturday and it meant we were able to get antibiotics started straight away...

I can see that it would free up a lot of unnecessary visits to the emergency department!

I have signed the petition too [emoji3]
