  • Recommend a Professional Lens

So i love taking photos with my Canon 100D, I switch between manual and auto, but have very, very basic understanding of the whole aperture/iso thing.

I do understand that its not all in the lens, but i know just enough to get the occasional professional looking photo, so I want a lens that will produce a really high quality photo when this happens!

I only use the basic lens that came with my camera at the moment, so wondering if somebody could recommend me a (not too expensive) lens that will increase the quality of my photos to a more professional quality.

Thanks and hope this makes sense

What sort of photos do you enjoy taking? Portrait? Landscape? Documentary style?

The first non kit lens that I bought was a Canon 50mm 1.4 and I think it's a great lens. It costs around $300 but if that's more than you wanted to spend, the 50mm 1.8 is about half that price.

Some people aren't a fan of prime lenses and prefer a zoom so it would be worth having a play with one before you buy one - you could see if there are any camera clubs in your area.

I would also recommend the canon 50mm 1.8 if you're interested in portrait, kids, pets or similar.

Thankyou, the 50mm 1.8/1.4 is is definitely within my price range, I have seen some up to $2000 worth! I love taking mostly portraits of my family and pets, and some landscapes when we go out.
I agree that I should do a course (I have already done one which is why I have a basic knowledge but it was so long ago I have forgotten a lot of it) i keep meaning too but live in the country so it's a big drive to do a course for me and then finding the time. I will do some research on the 2 lens mentioned thanks
