  • Teacher Advice Please

    I’ve written a few threads on this subject before but I need some advice.

    My eldest has just finished year 3 and I’m concerned over a particular aspect of his report.

    His maths overall Mark is a C, but one component (algebra and numeracy) is a D.

    I had asked his teacher, who had been lovely all year, to provide me with updates if he started to struggle. I got some updates but I didn’t realise that he was struggling so much to warrant getting a D.

    A specialist teacher, who had helped ‘minimally’ with his maths all year, had given him a test at the end of the year to gauge where he was at.

    I have just emailed him, and the reply I got was ‘X has not progressed to the next growth points for addition subtraction multiplication and division’. That’s all he said, other than wishing me a merry Xmas.

    What the F does that mean? That is just education jibberish to me and doesn’t help
    Me at all.

    I feel so sad for my kid.

    I almost feel like they just don’t care about him, that they are not offering an extra support for a child who seems to be slipping through the cracks.

    I refuse to believe that because he changed school in year 1 and fell very far behind, that he is unable to catch up to the rest of the kids.

    Can any teachers offer any advice?

    Don’t worry too much. Yes he is behind, but a D is actually only 6 months behind. C is average, right where they should be. I think the letters warrant confusion to a lot of parents.

      I’m a teacher. If I felt my child was falling behind I’d get outside help. Primary school is important for laying foundations, you don’t want him to get behind. Kumon is really good for maths.

      If you send your kid to a private school and you’re paying a lot of money then expect the extra help. Public schools can only afford to give so much support. One teacher, 30 students (though I’m high school and I understand primary has a better ratio than us but I’m not sure what that is) and time is a limiting factor too. It’s unfortunate we have the funding situation we do but we do so you may need to get him some extra help.

      I hope I don’t offend anyone with this and I don’t want to start a funding debate.

        C is average. D is a little behind. Best thing you can do is ask his teacher how you can help him. Ask for advice on workbooks etc that you can buy and complete with him at home. Ask them for guidance and you’ll be surprised how helpful they can be! 1 teacher to 25-ish students. After breaks, sport, assembly etc the teacher gets roughly 5-10mins per child. And that’s if the class is behaving! Good luck OP, I’m sure you’re son will catch up

          I'm a primary school teacher in the public system. As the others have said, a D doesn't mean dumb or bad or fail, it just means a little behind where he should be. For year 3 I wouldn't be too worried but worth mentioning to his teacher next year in the hopes of a little more scaffolded support in that area. Start working with him at identifying patterns in everyday life. That should help.

            I’m a teacher and agree with what’s said above, C is average so a D isn’t too bad and is fixable.

            I’d be pi**ed if a teacher gave me such a brief response, no matter if they are tired at the end of the year, it does nothing to inform you properly.

            I don’t teach Primary School maths but I’d recommend finding out what that skill involves and definitely let the teacher next year aware of your concerns.

              Sorry to butt in, but I wished I’d known about ‘C’ being average back when I was in school. Do teachers generally tell students/parents this?

                It's always been explained to us, and on the report card it states that C = the average they should be at and that it's in no way failing or behind. D (as explained on the report card) indicates the child may need some extra assistance in that area, however not necessarily failing. And we always get decent feedback from the teacher about any issues or areas that need improvement and why, how we can help and how the teacher can help.

                  The whole system has changed. I think that's where there whole confusion about a c grade comes in. When we were at school, a C was probably well below average. As a teacher, I get so many parents freaking out about their child receiving a C, whereas now that just means working at grade level. A D is working slightly below grade level and E is working well below grade level. I didn't give an A to anyone in my class this year, as it loosely means that they are working at a level 2 grades above - very rare.

                            I was always so confused by this. When I was at school, being a “straight A” student was hard but not unachievable. Several kids, myself included, got it every year.
                            My kids though, one of them is really smart and hard working. He gets the academic achievement awards for each subject. At our small school, the highest achievement for the year is like a six award but it’s a small k-12 school so it goes out to any grade. He got it in first grade. Youngest kid ever. Not trying to brag but just illustrating his exemplary schooling career so far. He has not gotten a single A. He only ever gets Cs with the occasional B.

                            I was so confused. I couldn’t work out why he was doing so “poorly” in his reports. This explains a lot though.
