In Episode Two we chat about early feeding. Those first few days with a new baby can be hard on the mother's body. And for many parents, feeding a new baby can cause a great deal of stress. During this episode we feature two great experts -
- Jen Mitrow is the assistant president of the Queensland branch of the Australian Breastfeeding Association. She’s an ABA counsellor and a certified lactation consultant. Jen became involved with the ABA after her first child was born.
- Jenni Watts is a midwife, lactation specialist and child health nurse, who has lived and breathed babies, infants, toddlers and their families for the majority of her working life. She works in a busy tertiary referral hospital, conducts infant clinics in the community and runs a private lactation consultancy.
Brad, Jen and Jenni openly discuss the basics of breastfeeding. Topics include - how to get started breastfeeding, how to express milk and how expressing systems work, and how often mums should feed their baby.
They also address some of the more worrisome aspects of breastfeeding, such as what to do if a mum is experiencing painful feeding, or engorgement / mastitis.
Brad, Jen and Jenni now take to the subject of bottlefeeding. They discuss bottlefeeding specific issues such as what 'demand bottle feeding' is, how to deal with non-cooperative babies, how and when to wean off a bottle, and the best time to return to work.
Jen and Jenni also give great advice on managing breast and bottlefeeding at the same time, such as explaining different milk volumes a baby needs between breast and bottle, the benefits of older child breastfeeding or alternatively changing to bottle exclusively.
Cat, one of the Bub Hub team who represents our forum members, asks Jenni a number of questions. Our experts generously give their advice on how and when to replace feeding with solids, the issues regarding breastfeeding the second time round, how to increase milk production, and what exactly is 'cluster feeding?'
Milk formula topics are discussed, including what 'step two formula' is, how much formular is enough, and how to keep bottles and things sanitised and clean.
Plus they reveal the pros and cons of breast pumps and how to use them most effectively.See all Bub Hub Club episodes
