However fit you feel after childbirth, you should take care and ease yourself back into your fitness programme. Let your instructors know your condition - they may modify some exercises (particularly abdominal ones) for you. If you had a caesarean-section, consult your doctor or physiotherapist before re-commencing exercise.

There are some specific post-natal exercise classes held around the region. Some are just for mums, others are 'mother & baby' classes where babies are welcome to attend and are often worked into the exercise routine, although the classes are still aimed at exercise for the mother.

Some local gyms offer creche and childminding facilities for parents to use whilst they exercise. Check your local gyms for details.

For details of classes in your region, click on the links below. If there is no link for your region, we have no listings for that area. If you are interested in exercising at home, view our page of pregnancy & postnatal exercise & fitness - at home equipment & services. It is advisable to discuss any exercise regime with your health care professional or physiotherapist first.

Pelvic Floor Exercises
The muscles of the Pelvic floor are important for the support of the internal organs as well as bladder and bowel function. The muscles can become strained and weakened during pregnancy and childbirth, leading to Pelvic floor dysfunction and continence problems (amongst others). If you'd like to read more about the importance of Pelvic floor muscles and see this online guide to Pelvic Floor Exercises from Women's Health Victoria.

It is extremely important to carry out pelvic floor exercises as soon as possible after childbirth and to seek assistance if you are experiencing any problems which could indicate a weak pelvic floor - the earlier these problems are treated, the greater the chances of successful treatment.
