Professional nannies and babysitters provide flexible child care options with agencies providing cover for regular bookings, changing bookings (for those with ever changing shifts) and occasional bookings as well as live-in and live-out full time nannies. They can also cover 'emergency' times when your child can't attend their normal carer - either due to illness or because the centre is closed for holidays. This type of care is flexible and generally a round-the-clock service, so if your needs can't be met by standard childcare centres and family day care, they probably can be met by in-home care.
Bookings usually have a minimum time period of 3 or 4 hours - check at the time of booking. Some nanny services also provide domestic helpers or carers who will provide additional assistance, such as cleaning, cooking or collecting the children from school. There are a growing number of online search and booking facilities - these are included within our listings.
It is possible to obtain child care benefit for a private nanny if you are eligible for child care benefit, but you must use registered care providers - and in some cases this means that the nanny / carer must be registered personally and not just the company that they were hired through. To be certain, check with the agency at the time of booking. For more information about government financial benefits, click here.
