Maternity hospitals operated on a private - patient funded, or public - state funded basis. Some larger hospitals offer facilities for both private and public patients. We have included all types of maternity hospitals within our listings and in each case we have indicated whether a facility accepts private or public patients or both. More comprehensive information about the types of pregnancy & childbirth care options available is included in our childbirth options page.

Many hospitals offer additional services to maternity patients, such as:

  • antenatal education classes in birthing and parenting
  • physiotherapy care
  • pre and post-natal exercise classes
  • mother and baby care classes

If you are choosing between several hospitals, you might like to ask what additional services are available before committing to a facility. Services offered are often different for public and private patients so ensure that the facility knows which type of care you are looking for when discussing services available.

midwife managed birthing centres
'Birthing centres' provide for more natural 'at-home' style ante-natal care, labour & birth. Managed by midwives, the philosophy is to have minimal use of pain-relieving drugs during the birth. Centres are located within hospitals so that more intensive medical care is immediately available should an emergency arise. We have identified in our hospital listings which hospitals currently have birthing centres. Places are limited and are only available to pregnancies considered low risk. Early enrollment is advised.

Baby Friendly Health Initiative
"The Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) is an international project that aims to give every baby the best start in life by creating a health care environment where breastfeeding is the norm and practices known to promote the health and well-being of all babies and their mothers are followed."

The scheme is administered by the Australian College of Midwives. We have indicated hospitals which have been accredited by the Baby Friendly Health Initiative with a BFHI symbol within our maternity hospital listings.

For more information on the scheme, visit the BFHI website.
