What's cool and sassy in denim this Autumn?

Since Levi Strauss first hit the catwalk in 1873 with the original pair of blue denim jeans, the humble piece of clothing has been a stalwart in the ever-changing world of fashion. To many of us, our favourite pair of jeans in the wardrobe (and let's be honest, girls, most of us have more than one pair) can transform an average day into an outstanding one. Whether you're having a sick day on the couch, relaxing on the weekend with friends or whether you've had a tiff with your boyfriend, who do you turn to for comfort and support? Your good old faithful jeans! |
Unfortunately, when we're expecting, we can't always keep these trusty friends by our thighs. Some of us don't get back into our pre-baby jeans for months after the birth, and the day that happens is a triumphant moment that all mothers will identify with, nearly equalling that of the birth itself and usually remembered down to the minute!
But that doesn't always need to be the case. We've done a bit of leg work and found out what is available in the sassy and stylish market place for pregnant fashionistas and lovers of jeans, enabling you to still carry on a relationship with your denim fetish, albeit in a style built for two!
We asked Bub Hub supporter, mother of two and owner of Bella Maternity & Children's Wear, Belinda Robinson, to give us the low down on what she sees as 'in vogue' at the moment.

"Yim Jeans for us in-store are very popular. Low rise, Sass and Bide-style make them a hit with many Yummy Mummies. They don't look maternity and we often have to tell customers they are (due to the elastic on the inside that adjusts). These jeans can be worn easily for months after birth without feeling like you are still in your maternity wear as they are so stylish and comfortable. Worth every cent. Most importantly, the generous sizing means you need to go down a size!!" Available in sizes 4-16 - in both bootleg and flare. Expect to pay around $199.99 RRP. |

"Szabo Jeans are our other best seller - slim line - with the tummy band that can be folded down for the mum that likes the layered look or pulled up in the later months for support, as well as making it easy to run after a toddler while still being comfortable. The darker wash denim makes this jean easy to dress up or down and is very slimming and it looks great on bigger sizes." Available in sizes XXS - XXL, you'll pay about $139.99 RRP. |
Another brand new on the market, Loom, and exclusive to Fragile, is designed for women who seek comfort yet want to feel elegant and attractive during their pregnancy. The new jeans are fashion orientated and target customers who want an exclusive look.

Loom offers two styles to ensure the ultimate fit: straight leg and bootcut. Comfort and elegance are guaranteed. "It is not uncommon for some clients to continue to wear our pieces well after their baby's birth" says Fragile's founder and designer Chris Degotardi. Available in sizes XS - XL, expect to pay between $190-$220 RRP. |
If you think that maternity jeans are only for the rich and famous, don't be fooled. You don't need to be a millionaire to afford the luxury of wearing denim during pregnancy.

Jeanswest have recently launched their range of maternity denim featuring two versatile fits: the stretch bootleg and the slim straight. Both of these styles are available in sizes 8-18 and you will pay around $65 RRP. |
If all these still seem to be priced a little out of your purse reach, you will be amazed at how diverse the ranges of maternity wear are becoming at the big department stores such as Big W, Best and Less, Target and K-Mart. Many style savvy mums-to-be know the value in mixing and matching, proudly teaming a low-priced maternity top with a stylish pair of maternity jeans and still managing to look a million bucks.
Thankfully, gone forever are the tent-shaped pinafores and smocks along with the American-style overalls pregnant women of yesteryear seemed doomed to wear. Pregnancy can now be time to look as good on the outside as we feel on the inside. So go to it and shop 'til you drop!
