Backyard trampolines - you'll be bouncing for job
With new generation designs now on the market, the backyard trampoline can be safe, fun and extremely beneficial for the whole family, having you all bouncing for joy in no time!
From humble beginnings, the traditional trampoline has come along way since George Nissen's first ever prototype trampoline in 1935. From the original design of angle iron with a canvas bed and rubber springs to the modern day design of no springs at all - trampolines have always served an important function in Australian backyards and will continue to do so.
We all know jumping is fun - but trampolining offers some great health benefits too!
Jumping improves:
- Balance and coordination
- Speed and agility
- Bilateral and Essential Motor Skills
- Rhythm
- Cardiovascular fitness which aids weight loss and enhances energy usage (DID YOU KNOW that 10 minutes of jumping is equivalent of a 30 minute run!)
- Bone density
- Improved lymphatic
- Low impact
WHEN BUYING A TRAMPOLINE - SAFETY SHOULD ALWAYS COME FIRST!
From oval to round, long and short, there are so many trampolines on the market but remember some trampolines can be very dangerous especially if they are not used in the appropriate manner. Statistics show that over 60,000 children get admitted to Australian hospitals each year due to old-style trampolines…
| Summary of Trampoline Injury Statistics | |
| Cause | Percent |
| Fall off of trampoline | 52% |
| Fall onto the frame or springs | 31% |
| Hit another child on the trampoline | 17% |
Some important points to look out for when buying a SAFE trampoline.
- Ensure it has adequate netting and protection to eliminate the risk of falling off the Trampoline.
- Ensure that the net is NOT held up by RIGID and stiff polls as this introduces another hard and dangerous impact zone.
- Springs (aka JAWS) are always dangerous as kids fall through them! Even when springs are covered with padding, the padding tends to move and disintegrate in the sun. No springs are the only way to go.
- Quality! Quality safe trampolines may cost you a little more, however, you will get a longer lifespan and it will be worth the investment.
Australia Needs to Pick up their Standards!
Many trampolines sold in Australia do not comply with the Australian Standard (AS4989 - Trampolines - Safety Aspects). The Australian Standard is voluntary, so for your family's peace of mind it is important to confirm your purchase does meet this important safety standard. To confirm, please contact www.kidsafe.com.au who will be able to advise further. There is currently only one trampoline on the market guaranteed to adhere to the Australian Standards. Make sure your next backyard trampoline is a safe one.
