Ever been at a sporting event, or playground, and just minding your own business with your kids when bam! Wafting over to you from the next bench seat are the sweet scents of cigarette smoke.
The title probably got you hooked – and you read it right! Victoria now has a ban on smoking near kid’s playgrounds, sporting fields, and skate parks.
The new law states that you may not smoke within 10 metres of a child’s public play area – including anywhere that has organised underage events, a children’s playground, skate park, or sporting ground. This applies to anywhere that is classed as an outdoor, public place where children play.

This does not apply to people on a residential property, to people driving through a smoke-free area, or to people within 10 metres, but across a road from the venue.
This ban is a state-wide minimum, so if a sporting ground or other premises has its own, bigger, non-smoking zone, that must be adhered to as well.
