Film Review – Thor: The Dark World

Thor the Dark World reviewMy son is about to go to high school. Hard to believe that his birth was the inspiration for the Bub Hub. We are regularly invited to review kids/toddler and ‘chick flicks’ but every now and then we get invited to review an action movie and Matthew and I have taken on the ‘heavy’ burden of reviewing these films.

Now, I do not want to sound like a broken record and should admit that I am a nerd from way back and had a lot of comics when I was a kid. But this new Marvel film is AWESOME! Great special effects, action a-plenty, great cameos and a lot of laugh-out-loud moments make this another box office success in the making for the Avengers franchise.

Sure having an Australian in the lead role probably helps but the entire cast is fantastic. Anthony Hopkins is intimidating as Odin, Loki and Darcy fight it out for the best one liners, all of Thor’s cronies from the first film are back and in fine form. Renee Russo shows us her fighting skills and the baddies are … well … bad, led admirably by Christopher Eccleston as Malekith!

The use of Chris O’Dowd in the film is magnificent, as Jane’s first dating attempt after being left behind by her god, this scene is one of the funniest moments in the film, from a long list!

The movie goes for just under two hours but the time seems to fly by. The storyline is great and the way they tied the worlds of the gods into modern London had Matthew looking for gravitational anomalies on the way home (just in case).

Brief synopsis without giving too much away is that Thor has been off pacifying the kingdoms and just as he sorts it all out an ancient bad guy comes back to threaten all of creation! He gets help from the lovely Jane (Natalie Portman) and her band of nerds to fight the good fight along with the odd Asgard demi-god.

The action is first-class, the story is magnificent, the special effects are seamless, the acting is great.  I would give this 11 out of 10 if I could. One of the few films I would happily watch again and again.  Ideal for families with older kids 7-8+ this is another rip-snorting Marvel action film. I’m looking forward to the next one and the one after that as this formula is working magnificently!
