So the results are in, and my gravest fears are coming true.
We really have stuffed things up.
Recent studies from the Global Carbon Project have shown that the world is set to be an “unrecognisable planet’, with a temperature rise of between 4 and 6 degrees by 2100. The data on greenhouse gas emissions confirms what scientists have been warning for decades – that unless we radically reform our energy systems and significantly reduce our emissions, the chances of staving off these increases are all but gone.
Surely now, Mr Important Politician, you might stand up and do something?
- I’m happy to give up my car and walk
- I’m happy to spend the rest of my life paying horrendous energy bills and surviving without any home comforts
- I’ll be happy if you fall on your sword and take a drop in the polls, because you made the hard choices… and I will respect you more
If these are the prices we need to pay to ensure our future generations have a home at all.
If our grandparents approached their greatest challenge with as much indifference as we are doing today, the world would be a very different place. They faced decades of hardship and of war, all for the greater good of the planet.
Now it is our turn.
Because I love our planet.
I love my family.
And I’d like both to be ok.
So please do whatever it takes, and build us a renewable future now.
