3 pregnancy photo trends I wish I’d known about 7 years ago

Gender reveal cake says it is a boy and is smeared on pregnant bellyGenerally I subscribe to the ‘no regrets in life, just lessons learned’ school of thinking. I truly believe that all the experiences and mistakes I’ve made have led me to where I am today.

But where I am today is running a business that is all about capturing and sharing pregnancy and childhood photos, and I am seeing so many insanely cute photos that I wish I’d been inspired to take when I was pregnant.

There’s only a couple of photos from my first pregnancy. There’s one of my bump and I on the beach in Greece reading a book, but I mainly look back on this to reminisce about the days when I got to go the beach with just a book, towel and bottle of sunscreen.

Then there’s one more of me at 9 ½ months slumped on the sofa in my bathrobe that my husband lovingly shot. I haven’t looked at it since the day it was taken.

And every image from my second pregnancy showcases my toddler, with me very much a runner-up in the spotlight stakes.

So I’m going to share the three cutest trends I’ve seen, in the hope of saving you from a severe case of pregnancy photo regret later down the road.

3 pregnancy photo trends I wish I’d known about

The Pregnancy Announcement

My friends still mock me for the email that I shot out to them in disbelief exclaiming, “I’m up the duff!” Now it seems that no pregnancy announcement is complete without a cute and creative image to accompany it.

From the ‘Eviction Notice’ to the Ice Ice Baby remix (below), creatively announcing your pregnancy on social media is a fun (and increasingly competitive) way to inform your friends and family that you will soon be expecting a new addition to the family.

Jump online to browse for inspiration – there are endless ideas to be found on the web. Once you have your announcement concept in mind, get your props ready for the photo shoot (these may be your family pet, pen and paper or a costume) and your smart phone ready to go. Happy snapping!

The Gender Reveal

Gender reveal cake says it is a boy

We recently ran a survey and it seems that finding out the sex of your baby is more common that not, with 54% of new parents choosing to discover their baby’s gender before the birth.

So the gender reveal announcement and gender reveal party is rapidly becoming ‘a thing’. Like the pregnancy announcement, parents-to-be are baking cakes with surprise pink and blue middles, organising sweepstakes and photographing the sweetest images to share their exciting news.

The Bump Time-Lapse

This beautiful time-lapse video  still inspires me every day to continue to capture my children’s lives.

The bump versions are pretty awesome too, like singer Tom Fletcher’s ultimate bump tracking video and song that he created with his pregnant partner. There are so many beautiful bump photo series for inspiration; you’ll get lost exploring the options!

The most effective way to create a time-lapse video is to focus your camera on something stationary or that changes slowly (i.e. a pregnant belly!), and then begin to capture a series of photos over time, from the same angle.

Whether you’re an iPhone or Android user, you will find plenty of apps and programs to assist you in compiling the end result into a beautiful documentation of a growing belly or child!

Have you created any of these images or announcements? If so, I’m jealous 😉

  1. We announced our pregnancy on Facebook with a picture of my husband (who had put a basketball and a smaller ball under his shirt to mimic my pregnant belly and bust) and I facing each other belly to belly. We had the caption “One of us has balls under their clothes. The other just looks that way because of afore mentioned balls.” People LOVED it. I can provide the picture if you wish, I just don’t know how to post it here.
