By joining Playgroup, families with young children under the age of five can play together in a safe and secure environment in their local community. Playgroups are set up and run by parents and caregivers where they stay and play with their children. Groups are usually held weekly for around two hours, in places such as community halls, kindergartens, or even someone's house.
Playgroup-aged children (0-5 year old's) are going through a stage of rapid brain and skill development, and play is vital to healthy growth. Playgroup is one of the few services that reaches children at this crucial age, and plays a role in promoting children's social, emotional and cognitive development.
Different low-cost activities offer children the opportunity to increase their cognitive skills, fine and gross motor skills, body control, hand-eye co-ordination, and spatial awareness. Children also develop verbal and non-verbal communication skills through their contact with other children and adults.
Adults also enjoy playgroup because they can meet other local families and develop new friendships.
Playgroups today are as different as the families that attend. There are weekend playgroups, Dads playgroups, young mums playgroups, and intergenerational playgroups. Some playgroups offer a lot of free play, others have a more structured format. It's a good idea to visit a few playgroups until you find one that suits you best.
Playgroup Australia is a Federation of 8 State and Territory Playgroup Associations (Members). These members interact directly with Playgroup's to nurture children, support families, and build communities.
