The Myth of Demeter
Demeter was the goddess of the harvest and was credited with teaching humans how to grow, preserve, and prepare grain. Demeter was thought to be responsible for the fertility of the land. She was the only one of the Greek goddesses who was involved on a day-to-day basis in the lives of the common folk.

Her daughter, Persephone, was abducted by Hades, god of the underworld and life came to a standstill as the depressed Demeter (goddess of the earth) searched for her lost daughter. The goddess endured povery, abuse (even rape), and maddness in search of her daughter,

Finally, Zeus could not put up with the dying earth and forced Hades to return Persephone by sending Hermes to retrieve her (the least he could do after betraying Demeter and sanctioning a marriage between Hades and the abducted Persephone). But before she was released, Hades tricked Persephone into eating four pomegranate seeds, which forced her to return four months each year.

When Demeter and her daughter were together, the earth flourished with vegetation. But for four months each year, when Persephone returned to the underworld, the earth once again became a barren realm. Thus we have the seasons.
