Growing up in a small community I had the advantage of a village lifestyle. Every where you went there were familiar faces to play with and our parents had a wide support network of family.

Now I live in the city and my parents and siblings are scattered in various states and towns. This means my children do not have access to the mutlitudes of family members that I had as a child.

As I listened to my daughter talk this evening I came to realise that I am in fact part of a different kind of community. My daughter has the good fortune of going to a very small school. Only 200 students. She spoke this evening of a sleepover she had a few nights ago. Her girlfriends older brother also had a mate sleeping over. The older sibling of another of my daughters classmates. It was as she talked of this second older brother that I realised just how many of the schools 200 students my daughter knew. She attends Drama, Ballet and Choir with students from all different age groups within the school. The school also has a mentor program within the student population that mixes the older and younger students together.

On top of this the many social functions organised by the school gives siblings of various ages to mix. Not to mention the parents. within the school I have found a diverse group of wonderful people all happy to help each other when they can whilst maintaining a sense of personal space and privacy. Sometimes I feel I may be getting just as much benfit from my daughter attending this school as she is.

My husband works away FIFO. In my daughters class of 29 students I know 25% of the dads work out of town on occasion if not regularly. All these ladies in the same boat willing to help each other pick up kids, car pool to parties, or just offer an ear when you need to vent is a treasure I feel priviledged to have.

So I know realise, I am part of a small community, a village if you will, within the city. I'm so glad that my kids will have the benefit of that kind of upbringing. I truly believe the sense of security it offers can be benificial to them becoming the well adjusted human beings I hope they will be.

Where does this self abusing need to stay awake come from. I don't know. Almost 10pm both the kids asleep and here I am on the computer instead of in bed. I guess it may be a need for some sense of "me " time before I crash for the night. A vane attempt to retain some individual identity perhaps. Some activity that is not child or family related.

oh my goodness, what bliss. A chance to rave on in a stream of consciousness with no-one interrupting or no husband driving me nuts by not paying attention. Now isn't that an eye opener. I'm happy to talk without him listening, but if He's in the room and chooses not to listen I am offended. Maybe when ever he's home I should just talk, and WHO CARES if he hearsme. That would promote the nice carefree attitude I'm trying to nuture this year. Well, at least this gives me an outlet to talk whilst my husband is away in the mine.
