Default Very fast....thank God!!

Hi everyone.
I just wanted to share my story with you all. It's a bit freaky how it happened so quickly.

My DH went off to work at 7:20am on Monday 21st Nov. and I started getting contractions at about 7:45am. At first I thought nothing of it because I wasn't due for another week, so I thought it could be a false alarm. (Can you tell this is my first baby?!) The only thing was that they were coming every 5-10 minutes like clockwork. I even came on here and was eating my breakfast while posting at about 9:00!! I went to the loo and found a bit of blood, so I rang the hospital and they said my show would probably happen soon.

At about 9:30am the contractions started getting about 4 minutes apart so I rang my DH to let him know he may have to come home early, then rang the hospital again after I had the show. The midwife was very calm and told me to ring someone close to keep me company until I was ready to come in. She seemed to think that being a first baby I wouldn't be in until later that afternoon or night.

I finished packing a few things to take to hospital at about 10:30am and rang my DH again to let him know that "it really hurt" and we decided he would come home in an hour. By this time the contractions were every 2-3 minutes and being at home by myself, I was getting a bit tense. Well, I didn't make it to an hour!! 20 minutes later I rang him again and said "come home now"! I was walking around my house constantly to help ease the pain.

I rang my best friend who thought I should get to the hospital ASAP as she thought I might be at the dilating stage judging by how fast the contractions were coming on. I went to heat up a hot wheat bag for a bit of relief, but pretty soon after my DH got home and I very shakily said "we need to go now"! Even he was surprised at how often I was contracting! We only live 2 minutes away from the hospital, but I had about 5 contractions between getting in the car and arriving at hospital reception.

Upon arriving the midwives were very calm and left me in the lounge for about 10 minutes - they had had a girl come in three times over the last day with false alarms and were soooo not ready for me!! I was soon examined and I'm sure they thought they would probably end up sending me home, but the midwife said "my goodness you have done very well at home on your own haven't you"! When I asked her what she meant, she said she was taking me to the delivery room as I was already 9 cms dilated!!

When we got in there at about 1:15pm, it was probably too late for any strong pain relief and after a few more contractions (with the gas) I was 10cms. I soon got the urge to push - wow! When that happens there's no stopping it hey? I was pushing for about an hour and a half, which was just delightful!! The midwives could sense my exhaustion and we tried a few different positions, but I went back to semi-reclining.

Meanwhile, my doctor had been teaching at a hospital on the other side of town and the midwives were a bit worried (I could tell!) that she wouldn't get there in time! They asked the private OB who was just around the corner if he could attend, but my own doctor arrived with about 30 minutes to spare!! Nothing like the last minute! I gave up on the gas for the last 30 mins. because it was more of a hindrance - picking it up, breathing , putting it down and bracing myself to push. No thanks! So, I just pushed without it! I must admit I did feel like Iron Woman or something, even though I was completely buggered.

The beautiful conclusion is that our gorgeous daughter, Eden Claire, was born (with one arm up - hence the long pushing) at 3:41pm. I got to watch the last part when she was half way out. The first thing I said was "holy crap"! I couldn't believe she was coming out of me!! After one last push, they put her on my chest and I couldn't speak! I just cried! Then I looked at DH (Shane) and he was crying too! The softy...it was very special. We had been thinking the baby was a boy, so we were very surprised when she came out a cutie, bright-eyed girl.

She is now home with us and doing well, apart from a few sucking dilemmas, which have since been sorted. Wow! I'm incredibly tired, but feel very blessed.

Thanks for reading my story.
Love,
Nan. xx
