Default richard christophers birthday

hi everyone,
hope u dont mind but ive never written my birth story and with #2 nearly here i started thinking about it again... hopefully writing it down will get rid of some of the bad feelings i have about it...
11th may my edd i woke up and had a show, i couldnt have been more excited , i fully expected to have my baby that day... 17th may almost a week of nothing and finally my contrations started every 40 mins or so lasting about 30 secs, sent dh off to work and told him to pop home at lunchtime to check on me... phoned my mum and told her to be on standby (she was at work but only 2mins from my house)
dh came home around 1pm and by then contractions were every 20 mins but still only lasting 30 secs... he phoned hospital and they said to stay at home until i felt i needed more help... at this point i can honestly say i wasnt in pain i was so sure id be at home for a good while longer and my perfect fully natural birth was on its way... how wrong was i
dh left at 2.30pm and almost immediately i was in agony contrations came every 8mins and lasted for 1 min... phoned my mum in tears and she arrived within minutes, she phoned the hospital and i was told to come in, by this time dh was back and packing the car... MIL phoned and told him to put a towel down in the car incase my waters broke... half way to hospital i realised he was sitting on it LOL!
arrived at hospital was put on monitor and given an internal to find i was only 2cm! i couldnt believe it i was so sure i was about to have this baby... midwife gave me 2 painkillers and told me to go home...
got back home and was there for about an hour, put tens machine on which irritated the hell out of me so it got thrown at dh...
headed back to hospital at 6.30pm when i really couldnt take it anymore again was put on monitor and had an internal, i was 4cm... i remember thinking i wanted to die i really couldnt take the pain... begged for an epidural which i had clearly stated i did not want in my birth plan
epidural was in and working i felt great, was put on a drip to speed things up and my waters were broken, there were traces of meconium in them so consultant came to see me to discuss options i have no idea what was said but between midnight and 7am they took blood from babys head to be tested for oxygen levels hourly, i progress to 7cm and baby heart rate dropped significantly lower as hours passed...
just after 7am the consultant was back to tell me baby was in great distress and he wanted to do a caesarean immediately....
i was absolutely panicked, i threw up everywhere and got myself really worked up and upset... along came a registrar with a consent form for me to sign, took dh off to get suited up for operating room and i was wheeled through...
anethetist came in topped up my epidural (for about the10th time) put another drip in and dh was brought in...
the room was filled with ppl, paedeatrics midwifes surgeons and god only know who else, within minutes ds was lifted from my tummy and taken to the peadeatricians... he didnt make a sound and i couldnt see anything, i was so sure he hadnt made it i kept asking what was happening but noone told me anthing... it felt like hours passed me by but after 10 minutes ds was brought to my side for me to see, dh held him for a minute or two and we gazed at him... he was then taken to special care as he had taken so long to breathe by himself (9mins) and had very low apgars (1,4)
afterwards i taken to recovery and cleaned up, then moved to the maternity ward i was eventually reunited with ds at lunchtime (he was born at 753am) when the nurse took me in a wheelchair to the special care baby unit...
ds was there for 5 days and given antibiotics for a slight lung infection... we were allowed home on the 7th day....
im so happy to say that after a real horrible start he is now an absolutely thriving one year old who lights up my life...

thanks for listening and sorry for going on for so long...
jane
