1st bub - 3.5hr labour!
Hi everyone
Inspired by reading James Daniel's birth story, I thought I'd share my own. EDD was Feb 23 and by the final week, I had had enough! It was hot in Melbourne, I was uncomfortable and large and couldn't sleep properly. In the final few days I ate chilli, had sex, soaked in warm baths... anything to bring bub on! THE START... At 3.55am I woke feeling like I needed to go to the toilet, only to find when I sat down I had a huge contraction lasting for 5 mins.  It was nothing like what I had read about, so I told DH not to worry and tried to get back to sleep. I watched the alarm clock and noticed I was having what I would describe as strong period pain every 2 mins, lasting for up to a minute at a time. I rang the hospital who said I was probably underway but to stay at home until I was uncomfortable and to ring back if/when my waters broke. WATERS BREAK At around 4.15am I felt like I needed to pass wind (excuse my honesty!) only to find I felt some fluid and I jumped on the toilet only just in time for my waters to break. I knew it was my waters as I had a liner in my undies and it was completely light pink (as I had had described to me) THE SHOW At about 4.30am I again felt like I needed to go to the toilet and I found I had a lot of blood. I rang the hospital who said it was my 'show', but I was concerned because everything I had learnt said it should be mucousy with a little blood, not mainly blood! I decided to go into the hospital but fully expected to be sent home. MY DH I should interrupt the story here to give you an insight to my DH! He was following me around the house with his stop watch, madly writing down when each contraction started and finished! So cute! I nearly snapped his head off though when I explained that first long contraction, his response was 'Well babe, maybe it was something we ate because my guts don't feel so good either!!  My response was 'could you please not create your own medical emergency while I am in LABOUR!!!'  THE CAR RIDE It was during the car ride that the contractions really strengthened and poor DH was trying to accomodate me. One moment I would say 'can you please slow down, this speed is making my pain worse!' and the next I'd be saying 'For god's sake, can you step on it! At this rate bub will be born on the HWY!' ARRIVING AT THE HOSPITAL When we arrived we had to use the after hours emergency entrance and the midwives were waiting for me. From all accounts (it's all a little hazy to me) apparently I was very friendly and polite, so much so that they all thought I couldn't possibly be in labour! INTO THE BIRTHING SUITE As soon as they showed me to the birthing suite we were in full swing. All I felt like I needed to do was a big poo, so I sat on the toilet. I immediately had diarrheoa and I vomited - it's like my body was expelling anything that was taking up any energy. I needed all my energy to get bub out. By now it was 6.30 in the morning and I spent a good 30 mins sitting on the toilet. They offered me some gas, but just as soon took it away from me as I was simply biting down on the mouthpiece instead of breathing it in! EPIDURAL? DH and I had decided no epidural prior to the birth, but by now I was in so much agony I was begging for it. Keep in mind I also assumed I had hours ahead of me. The midwife checked me and said I was fully dilated so I couldn't have it. Boy did I cry! I begged and begged, but they said it was too late. I even tried to convince another midwife when she first entered the room! HERE HE COMES! I couldn't get comfortable on my back so I gave birth standing up. The midwives continually checked baby's heartbeat, and after around 30 mins of pushing they said he was distressed. This scared me enough to give one enormous push which finally saw him arrive at 7.30am (on the dot!)  . I should say at this point that I never actually felt like pushing, rather I just wanted it to be over so I started to push! Anyway, they wrapped him in a cloth nappy and passed him up to me through my legs. He was so beautiful! Sure, a little bruised and battered but beautiful all the same to me. DH cut the cord and I asked 'what is it?' to which my obs replied 'have a look yourself'. We unwrapped him like a pressie to reveal that he was a little boy. We were elated, DH cried but I was straight into mother mode of making sure he was ok. How natural it comes to you! WHAT SURPRISED ME... 1) I must say I never anticipated the birth to feel so much in my bottom - it really did feel like a big poo! Well... make that an astronomically large, gigantic, words cannot describe how big, poo!! 2) I never anticipated I would be so sore (I tore badly because I gave birth upright), and therefore had the baby blues quite bad when I got home. I never realised I'd have to look after myself as well as this little person. 3) Never, ever in all my dreams did I think my birth would be so quick! I had imagined hours of walking around my back yard and soaking in the bath with candles and Pete Murray playing. I wish! I wasn't even allowed to have a bath at the hospital - there was just no time. AN AMAZING JOURNEY While I must say it took me a long time to realise it (because it is painful, there is no doubting that), it really was an amazing experience and I am so proud I delivered my baby. It is certainly my biggest and best achievement to date! As women, we are so lucky to have such an experience and little ones to treasure. Kade is now 11 weeks old and the absolute delight of our lives Anyway, hope this has been of interest. For those of you TTC or expecting number 1, I truly hope you enjoy your pregnancy as much as I did and your little ones even more. Good luck!

OOOH! I love your sotry - I laughed most of the time especially about your DH beacuse I'm just picturing what would happen when I go in labour - My DH would probably be the same.. Oh so cute!!! Thank you so much with your post. It was a great read! Congratulations and and it admire me to have a natural birth. The achievement feeling seems really great - so thank you!!

Wow, what a wonderfull story! Congratulations!! Thank you for sharing your birth story! I am expecting my first bub on the 1st August and although most first labours I have been told are quite slow, your story has made me think that things coud happen a lot quicker!! Congratulations!!
