Thumbs up The birth of Lily..(A successful VBAC)

On my due date I woke at 4.50am with a horrible cramp in my calf.....It woke DH up and after some stretching I went to the loo and did a wee. After wiping myself I noticed a small show (but had been getting little show's for weeks). When I stood to put undies on I was dripping, so I walked into bedrom and was still dripping and knew immedietley that my waters had ruptured. Straight away my contractions started and were about 10 mins apart and already fairly strong so I just breathed my way through them while I organised the last of my things and showered. By 6am they were 7 mins apart and lasting longer and stronger so we woke the kids and got them ready for there babysitters.

At 7am we left home to go to my mums and by this stage the contractions were 5 mins apart, lasting 90 secs and very strong. The car ride was horrible and it hurt to sit - it was frustrating as I was controlling the pain by standing, leaning forward and pelvic rocking. So sitting in a car was dreadful...
We got to mums and this is when I started to go into my own little world - I thought the contraction were still 5mins apart and was getting annoyed at mum who kept saying "lets go to the hospital now" as I wanted as little intervention as possible. But my contractions had gone to 3mins apart and VERY VERY strong, so at 8.15am we got to the hospital.

The midwife did a CTG and all was fine so at approx 9am I jumped straight in the spa - which was heaven....( I did not think they would let me as I was trying for a VBAC, but they said aslong as I hav a 20 min trace done on the CTG and all was fine then it should be OK..) at 10am the Dr arrived and I had to get out so he could do an internal....(I was not sure if I was excited or scared as I was dreading he would tell me I was only 1cm..). It was music to my ears that I was 5cm...(YAY)
I wanted to get back in the spa and the midwife reluctantly agreed as she said I would have to have a short spa as she thought I would deliver by 11am...(Yeah right I thought...when she walked out the room I asked my DH if she was on drugs to think I was that close to delivery....)

Just after 11am I got out (and had a big, bloody show when I did) as the pain was really intense and I was finding it hard to get comfy through the contractions. I asked for the gas and found this really helped ( I only breathed it in until the contraction hit its peak as I didn't want to feel too out of it). I also got the excercise ball and had it on the bed while I was leaning forward over it, which helped take the pressure away that I was feeling. I soon had enough of that and lied on my side on the bed and was still using the gas and I then started to feel the baby move down and all the pressure that comes with it. The midwife started to call in the Dr and another midwife to help with the delivery and I remeber thinking - they cant possibly be right, I still thought I had ages to go and that the pain would have to get much worse. The midwife did another internal and could see bubs head, she was in perfect position and said that as soon as I felt the urge that I could push.

Well I didn't have to think about it as my body just took over and started push so I just pushed with it. Then I started to feel a burning sensation and hubby and my mum were getting really excited as they could see a small part of her head. The midwife kept telling me to push and push (but every time I felt that burning I stopped and then started again) but then with the next contraction I did one big push and out came her head, it hurt but I felt relieved that in one more push it would be over. When the next contraction came the midwife said just breathe and I could feel her slipping out of me (and was surprised that her body being born didn't hurt like I thought it would) and then the rest of my waters broke and out was Lily Grace......
They put her on my chest as the placenta was being delivered and hubby, my mum and I just stared and couldn't beleive it happened so quick.
Lily was born at 11.46am
8 pound 5 ounzes
57 cms long
37 cms Head circ.

After she was born I had a nice hot shower and then enjoyed a beautiful salad just in time for lunch.

I only had one small graze and required no stitching - I owe that to my wonderful Midwife as she guided me all the way through pushing and told me precisely how to breathe.

I was so surprised at my wonderful labour as I had 2 previous scary ones that were not pleasant at all (epidural and forceps with No 1, and then an elective ceaser with No 2). I had built myself up for it to be the worst and most painful experience and it was nothing like that at all - it was actually quite pleasant...
