Default Zofran opinions - desperate pls help!

I'm almost at 8wks now (3rd pregnancy) and suffered HG with my second pregnancy - spending a week in hospital. Maxolon did nothing, and MS thankfully ran its course by around 16wks and I was then OK until term. I could stand and function after a fashion, but not this time. I haven't left the house for 2 weeks and can't get out of bed. I'm conscious about hydration and so unlikely to be admitted to hospital (not that I could get to the doctor anyway!)

I'm now looking for options on drugs that 'work'. Zofran seems the most commonly referenced one. Does this work when nothing else does?, and if so how can you access it? I've read other threads talking about PBS and the cost...

Thank you all for any advice.

I had HG with my 2nd pregnancy so i know what you aregoing through. I got to the stage I couldn't keep anything down including water so after trying maxalon and a few visits to hospital the hospital gave me zofren to take home. For me it was a life saver. Back then (3 years ago) I was told zofren would cost $60 a tablet but thankfully for me the wonderfull OB at the hospital got permishion for me to take some home. Zofren didn't stop the nausea and I did occasionally still but it ment I could keep most things down so i could keep hydrated and stay out of hospital.

some of the other ladies who have used zofren more recently will be able to tell you of how much it costs now (I know it is a little less).
Best wishes i hope you find something that will work

I am now 35 weeks and have had to have Zofran on and off since I was 4 weeks (oh yes I am hanging out for this bub to arrive now!!!). It is expensive but it's the only thing I've been able to take (have severe allergies to maxalon and stemetil so couldn't even try them....)

Anyway as far as cost, I have had to pay around $90 for 10 tablets and my helath fund will rebate $45 per script (up to $450 - I'm with NIB). I don't know about getting it rebated through the PBS but it'd be worth asking your ob/gp anyway.

Hope this is helpful and I also hope your m/s runs its course quickly and disappears!!!

Its so awful when your ms is that bad! I suffered badly from it during my pregnancy and found Zofran worked wonders for me! It is expensive but well worth the money! I got mine when i went to the emergency room at our local womens and childrens hospital and they also gave me a repeat script!

Hi,
I was in hospital with really bad Hyperemesis during this pregnancy. The doctor prescribed Maxalon, and Zofran tablets, but neither worked (Zofran only a little bit). The only thing that worked for me was a stint in hospital, getting Zofran through an I.V. I felt so much better though!Eventually, the morning sickness eased off at about 16-17 weeks.

Zofran is a class B drug drug, meaning there are only limited studies on it's effectiveness/safety for pregnant women. However, anectodal evidence suggests it's quite safe, and generally very effective for morning sickness. I would definately give it a go if you are feeling sick. I think it cost me about 10-$15.00/tablet, but usually you only need one every few days or so....to keep on top of the symptoms.

I really hope you feel better soon, it's so horrible, you poor thing. I promise there is light at the end of the tunnell!

Take care ,
Jo

I had HG with my pregnancy and was on Zofran from 11 weeks til delivery. It was fantastic, it stopped most of the vomiting ( I'd still throw up when I woke up but after the wafer I wouldn't usually vomit again til the next morning, except in the first 5/6 months I did get sick again by the evening)

I wasn't able to get out of bed for months and was hospitalised 5 times. Mum and DH were like " do you think you might like to have a shower today....."

It was costing $60 for 4 x 8mg wafers which I was halving but then a midwife set me up to get them from the hospital pharmacy for $25 for 4 weeks worth (I had to pick it up 1 week at a time but just paid at the begining of each month)

I really hope you feel better soon, I know how awful it is!!

The wafer is better to take than the tablet too. The wafer is absorbed straight away into your system so if you vomit again it will still be effective whereas with the tablet you'll just bring it back up again.

Having been in your shoes, you really need these . I had hyperemesis when pregnant with DD who is now 17 weeks old. I had it during my whole pregnancy and the only thing that worked was the zofran wafers. I was hospitalized too many times to mention to be put on a drip, and had to take zofran even the day I went into labour. I had 8mg wafers which in the end I quartered. 4 x mg wafers would cost me $32.

I am one to hate taking even panadol, but for the sake of my health, I had to realise that keeping some food down was definately more important than worrying about the possible side effects. DD was born perfect in every way, so that put my mind at ease in case I need to take it again for any future pregnancies.

I do hope you feel better soon and feel free to PM me anytime if you need a whinge. Going through this horrible sickness I can relate and give you (much-needed) sympathy.
