Default Baby jelly

Andrew looooves the baby jellys that you buy in jars at the supermarket. But I find them obscenely priced for something that is eaten in one sitting - do I really want to spend $25+ on baby jelly a month?? NO!!

Is it ok to give bubbas regular jelly, Aeroplane Jelly etc? Or is it too sugary?

I just reaaally want to cut down on the money I am spending on his 'snacky' foods and if I can make a few days worth of it myself at once, that would be fantastic!

Thanks

Nicole - Robyn Barker has a recipe for fruit jels in Baby Love which I will hunt out and post for you. My girls are both over 1 and I give them aeroplane jelly as a treat every now and then - but it is pretty sugary!

Juice and gelatin ... the directions for the amount of gelatin to use are on the side of the packet. My kids loved it - especially the one made with cranberry juice.

I just had to add my spare change to this one...

If you notice that the store fruit gels aren't a wobbly as jelly, nor are they as solid. I find these to be closer in texture, and the Agar Agar gum is a natural alternative to gelatin

I make this recipe for my son and he loves it

Fruity Gels

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup cool water
  • 1 tablespoon agar flakes*
  • 1 1/2 cups fruit juice
  • 1 cup puréed fruit

* a thickener derived from seaweed. It is available in natural food stores.

Directions
  1. Place water in small saucepan.
  2. Sprinkle in agar and stir to dissolve.
  3. Add juice and heat for 1 minute, stirring well. Pour into 4 small cups.
  4. Place in refrigerator.
  5. After 1/2 hour, stir in puréed fruit.

Mix 3 teaspoons of gelatine powder with 1/4 cup of juice
Stand cup over a pan of simmering water until geletine is dissolved
Stir gelatine mixture into 3/4 cup of juice
Refrigerate until firm

Enjoy

Remember not to use pineapple juice as it wont set

Just make sure you remember to dilute the fruit juice minimum of 50/50 with water before making the jelly eg. if the recipe calls for 1/2 cup of juice only use 1/4 cup and top up with water. Too much fruit juice can cause tummy pains in babies.

The recipe I use is:

1 1/2 tsp gelatine mixed w half a cup of boiling water. Stir until completely dissolved, then add half a cup of fruit juice. That way the juice is diluted 50/50.

My 7mo bub loves it.
