    Default UTI in newborn?

My DS is 7 weeks old and for the last couple of days his urine has been smelling that bad that you can smell his wee at the door way (and I change his nappy very regulary).

I think he may have a UTI.

I am a nurse, nothing grosses me out, but it smells so bad that I dry reach.

Has anyone elses baby had a UTI?

I dont understand how he could of caught it. I am so careful with cleaning him and stuff.

He has no penile discharge or anything, just this extremly foul smelling wee.

    Help?!

    Raz

Sometimes over-cleaning can cause an infection, when it comes to penis's (penii? )

You're a nurse, and I'm just a mum so this is just from me as a mum - but if my kids have smelly wee, I assume they need more hydration. Is he feeding enough? As you know, at this age they need feeding whenever they're awake, and even if it's just a snack or comfort feed - that foremilk has the watery-ness and is great for keeping them hydrated.

On another angle - what are you eating? If you're eating something that could make your wee smelly, then it's logical that it could possibly do the same to him. Asparagus, etc. I'd keep a food diary, do an elimination diet, try drinking more water yourself.

Oh, and I'm sure you're not, because you're a nurse - but you're not retracting his foreskin, are you? That is of course a HUGE no-no. The foreskin is fused to the head of the penis, like a fingernail is fused to the nailbed, and if you ripped your fingernail right back to clean under it, you'd probably get an infection there too. So no retracting (but I'm sure you don't do that - just thought I'd mention it for anyone else reading )

Hope your little man's wee gets better soon!!

Oh just had another thought - do you use cloth nappies? If you use hemp nappies, sometimes hemp gets very smelly and needs a regular strip wash.

    Hey

Well I am formula feeding, so its not what I am eating. And he is a gobble guts and is a massive drinker, feeding 3hrly having about 180mls.

Cloth nappies yes - but been using disposables these last couple of days - so its not that.

No abuot the pulling back the foreskin.

But its just come into my mind what it could be. He has had a bit of thrush, and I am thinking maybe the anit thrush cream has got into his urinary tract and caused a reaction.

Whatever it is its making me very very upset.
