    Default Foamy Poos

My bub has had frothy, runny, watery poos for a fortnight or so.

He is ganing weight and mostly happy, although we do have bouts of reflux and LOTS of gas and carry on at poo time. Occasionally he really cries and carries on, but not all the time.

    Any ideas?

Is it green? It might be a fore/hind milk imbalance.

Are you on an elimination diet?

Sounds like lactose intolerance to me. Both mine had it and they were like that.

    Are you Bf or ff???

    I am BFeeding

I've been holding back on milk, cream cheese etc but havtn been really strict - milk products are in so much stuff!

Will try and eliminate all together and see what happens.

Its got worse the last few days and all poos come with a screaming session. He is happy after, but its pretty clear that the pooing causing lots of pain.

Are you swapping boobs in a feed? Cobey got like this (and gassy) when I swapped boobs... because he'd get more of the "sugarry" milk and less of the richer milk... so I'd start leaving him on the same boob per feed, he'd come off midway, I'd burp him and pop him back onto the same boobie. When he came off again, I'd try the other one (normally rejected, but I'd always offer) his poo went from greenie and he stopped being so gassy

Mostly he only takes one breast. Maybe once a day he takes both.

The strange thing is he is putting a lot of weight, 40-45 grams a day the last few weeks.

I was just reading on the ABA website that he may be having too much lactose. So large volume, low fat feeds that go straight through... this mimics lactose intolerence.

Who knows! There seems to be a few possibilities to work through.

    Its confusing.

i'm not a health expert at all...but from what i gather true lactose intolerance is extremely rare in bubs as breast milk is really high in lactose and so bubs are born ready to digest the lactose...I'm not saying that it doesn't exist but from my research it is rare and if it does occur it is only temporary.
my 9 wk old girl's got silent reflux and like you has been doing frothy runny poos that are bright yellow...despite being on formula. they generally are so big they escape the nappy and we end up with poo everywhere...she is extremely farty and squirms and cries until she can get the gas out. i have found that taking her to the chiro has helped a bit and have changed formulas as i believe she has a sensitivity to a protein in cows milk (different from lactose intolerance)...however from what i've heard cutting out dairy from your diet should help

Sounds like your bub has a lactose intolerance. From what I've read about this, changing your diet does not change the amount of lactose in your breast milk. Primary lactose intolerance is rare but there are a few other types of lactose intolerance, such as a temporary intolerance due to a gastro-intestinal upset. I'd take bub to the dr to get a proper diagnosis.

I had this with my DS and it was due to a milk protein allergy..........much different to a true lactose intolerence (which will lead to a very sick bub), try cutting out ALL dairy from your diet for two weeks, it can take up to this time for results to show (it took ten days with us). And you do need to be really strict for that period- check the ingredients of EVERYTHING (even bread has milk protein!), then you slowly reintroduce stuff to see how bad it is.

My DS had grown out of it by 6mnths.
