    Default I have a question.

I'm not sure if this is the best place to put this and if the mods feel its not please move/delete it.

I've got to have a D&C next week, but the information I have been able to find is sketchy at best.
My question is: What can I expect to happen? Will I be totally knocked out or will they just give me a local? Can I choose? I've never had any surgery before and I'm kinda freaking out.

I appreciate that most ladies would rather not disclose such personal information online but if you could PM me I would be very greatful.

I was given a *twilight* anasthetic, so I was completely out, but only for 1.30hrs or so.

I was not given the option of a local, But I diddnt ask (so worth asking if your wanting that)

The D&C Was far more emotionally painful than physically painful for me. Only after efects were cramping and bleeding (Light for about 4 days)

I am so so so sorry for your loss.

Sometimes people look into the sun and see nothing but the eternal dark
Instead of attacking them, why not share some of your sun?

    Be KIND today and everyday.

    Hi Jaime,
    I had a d& c in january,and it was ok.
They knock you out for the op,and you have to stay for a few hours after.
They check that you dont bleed to much etc.
I found the nurses very kind and caring.
I had no pain after the op,just emotional.
    Sorry for your loss too.

I had a D&C done in Jan and I was scared - but it's actually scarier than it sounds and sooo many women go through this procedure - you're not alone.

Basically you go in for the day (day surgery) and the procedure is under general. The way the doctor described the procedure to me was like a vacuum cleaning up the uterus taking away all the "gunk" and making it all nice and clean again. Your body adjusts by thinking you've just had your period so it's like another cycle - so most people get their period back from 4-6 weeks (like a regular cycle).

The actual procedure is very quick - about an hour I'm told if that - my surgery was done at lunchtime about 1.30pm and I woke up about 3.30pm, had some sandwiches and juice and was discharged at 5pm.
Didn't feel any pain or had any side effects - just the emotional healing for me.

My doctor said it was ok for us to start trying again for a baby after the bleeding had ceased - some people prefer to wait until their next cycle to make sure all is ok - we didn't wait though :P

    All the best...

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.

I had a d&c 4.5 weeks ago. I was very nervous but just wanted it all over and done with so I can start to look up again.

I went into day surgery and was under general anaesetic for just over an hour. The actual procedure only took 10mins! I wasn't given the option but I think it is more pleasant to be knocked out for the procedure rather than being aware. As soon as I woke I cried a lot as my emotions were all over the place. I had cramping so they gave me some pain killers and a sandwich. I had a nap for about 2 hours then I went home. I bled for 1 day then just had spotting for 3 weeks.

AF hasn't visited yet but I am starting to feel the twinge, so hopefully it will be here soon.

I hope this info helps you. Don't hesitate to ask any more questions. to you.

Thank you all so much for your replies. I'm glad its a straight forward procedure. I guess my main worry was how long I would be out. I'm still BF my 1yr old so I need to know how much milk to have for him, or if he's just gonna have to have formula/cow's milk for the day. (he's a real boobie man. can be very demanding at times)

I had a D&C in Jan after a miscarriage. They knocked me out completely, which I didnt realise they were going to do so I freaked out when they told me. But it was ok. The hospital I went to was wonderful. I was in a bit of pain after the procedure so they gave me some pethadine and a couple hours later I got to go home. All up I was at the hospital for about 8 hours max. But the operation only took like half an hour, I think I was knocked out for an hour and a half.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

I've had two d+c's now (neither for miscarriage - the most recent one was for retained placenta after Claire was born).

Its as the others described, only under light anaesthesia (you're fully asleep though), and its a day-stay procedure. I was home by lunchtime with my 'recent' one - was only there for about 3 hours total.

Just wanted to warn you though (Might not be a problem!) that the anaesthetic does go into your breastmilk. Claire was only 4.5 months old when I had mine done, so was exclusively breastfed. They told me I had to pump and dump a feed, but could feed her again afterwards. But for about 2 weeks after we had troubles breastfeeding, I think because it dramatically changed the taste of the milk for alittle while and then she had some refusal issues for a little while. It did all come good after 2 weeks though.

Good luck, and I hope things go as well as they can

    Hi,

i had one yesterday after a m/c i was 7 weeks 5 Days. I was only there for 3 hours all up, i was put to sleep then the next thing i remember was waking up which was only an hour all up they said. its called Twilight Anethestic. I am a little sore today and when i woke up from the surgery but they gave me some pethadine and a hot blanket across my lower half which helped. my bleeding has stopped already but other then that im feeling good. I was terrified and this was my first ever surgery. Some ppl get sick from the anethestic but i woke up fine, just tired i came home and slept all night, but there is nothing to be worried about its quite simple and the staff in recovery are really nice they have to be special ppl to do that job.

Im sorry For your loss( We m/c the same day & same gestation), its hard, mine was taken from us due to incompetent medical staff at the hospital my baby was healthy untill then. Feel free to pm me if you want to ask any direct questions.
