    Default guzzler!??!

Hi all - I have recently weaned my 4mth old DD to bottles, and she seems to be a real guzzler! She will take anywhere between 180 - 240ml a feed! and guzzles it within about 5 to 8 mins! I know that's not good because she then brings up milk a few times after each feed - not necessarily straight away. I use Avent bottles and the teats are the 3mth "medium flow" teat (I also have some variable flow ones, which I use on the number 1 slot, being the medium flow, I think?). Am I giving her too much? What can I do to get her to not guzzle?? Thanks

also, she seems to get quite agitated and "talkative" after a feed too and then that is when she brings up the milk - so she is obviously in discomfort!!??

If she's bringing it up and you can see it's not digested and it's just overfill then she's having too much. Try just giving her 150ml (for example) and when it's finished put the dummy straight in her mouth. This is what I do with DS otherwise he would eat forever and when the dummy is in his mouth he doesn't seem to mind anymore that there's no food coming out of it.
I'm not sure how to stop the guzzling except maybe to alternate bottle with dummy throughout the feed to space it out a bit. Maybe shes eating too quickly to realise shes not hungry anymore?
hopefully it will work for you

Sorry not much help in that area coz ive just started on bottle feeding myself but can i ask how long did it take for you milk to dry up? Did you do it naturally? If so how did you cope with the pain?

Sounds like shes getting it too fast so a slower teat might help.
I would try a slow flow teat and see how she goes.
I find dd is still on them at 4 months. Did try the 3mth+ but still too fast for her and guzzled and choked.
Slight discomfort for my DD I would say yes now as shes older she seems to know when its going to happen and grizzles just before. Cant feel good as we ourselves know what that feels like...Not pleasant at all.
But try a slower teat, hopefully she wont mind taking longer to get her feed and should help keep it down
    all the best.

I second the slow flow Avent teat (number 1 I think).
The slower flow will make her work for it and she'll be unlikely to guzzle

Someone said (CHN?) that the slow flow teats are closer to the flow of breast milk....

My milk comes out way too fast so it has the same effect on DS.
I've found burping mid-feed works well to prevent vomiting, sometimes it takes up to 30mins to get a burp out. But if I don't get him to burp he inevitably vomits.

    Hope you work it out

Thanks everyone. Last night and this morning I tried slowing the feed down by giving her breaks and giving her the dummy. Also offered her 180ml instead of more. That seemed to work well. She still guzzled though. So yeah might try going back to the slow flow teat. She definitely hasn't brought up milk like she was doing though.

Just gave DD her bottle before using the slow flow teat (1mth+) - she definitely had to work hard for it and it took her about 20 to 25 mins to finish a 180ml bottle! So that definitely stopped her from guzzling!

Sounds like she needs something in between the two teats.

You can also try loosening the 1 month+ teat to make the flow slightly faster, or alternatively tightening the 3 month+ teat to make it slower.

Sometimes if they have to work too hard to get the milk out they can swallow a lot of air and they end up with tummy/wind pains.

If Avent doesn't end up working for you, you can also try another brand. We use Pigeon and they are very good.
