Default Hamilton Island with young bub

    Hi All,

We are off to Hamilton Island next week and it will be our first time travelling with our 10 week old son. I just wanted to know from anyone who has been up there how you travel around the island? FIL booked everything for us (its for MIL's surprise 60th) and the booking details say we are picked up in a golf buggy - Im not too sure about travelling around with DS in a golf buggy, doesn't seem safe (or legal - I think he legally has to be in a car seat) just wanted to know if I should take the pram so I can walk or is the island too big that walking would be exhausting? Im getting a bit stressed at what to take etc etc hints for travelling with a young bub would be appeciated.

    Thanks in advance!!

Sorry mods if this is in the wrong place, feel free to move it

Do you know where you will be staying?

Are you in the resort or in a self-contained apartment elsewhere on the island?

Hi I understand your concerns. Its suddenly different when you have to consider transporting a little one around!

I think the airport landing site is a long way from the resort so you may need a bus or buggy for that bit only. As far as legalities and car seats etc its legal to hold a baby on your lap in a taxi so I am sure it would be in a golf buggy or bus. They really go pretty slowly. If you are worried you could carry baby in a sling so they were attached to you and sit between 2 people. Contact the resort if you are concerned.

From memory it is certainly possible to walk everywhere else once you are there. I am sure other people remember better than me, but its probably 15 mins walk from self-contained down to shops and harbour, maybe less.

We stayed a week in self-contained and only used a vehicle to get to and from airport, all teh rest was walking. People certainly use golf bggies to get around but you don't have to.

    HTH

There are really only 3 forms of transport whilst you are there - buggy, bus or walking.

You should get picked up by a bus from the airport and then taken to the check-in area. At this point, you will be given your buggy if one is included in the package. If your family is already there, they will already have the buggy.

Some permanent residents have installed carseats in the buggies but honestly, the majority of people trek around with bubs in a sling or held in the buggies. It's not ideally practical for babies but you will find that the traffic is extremely laid back and you can putter around at your own pace, however slow and steady that may be.

The middle of the island is a large hill and most of the self contained accommodation (away from the resort) is on the hill itself. You wouldn't want to be trying to push a pram around there but you may want to take one for when you are walking around the resort or the marina area (where the shops are).

It's a very kid-friendly resort and you will feel more relaxed once you are there - it's hard to imagine what it is like but it truly is a lovely place (check out the photo in my Zoints profile).

    Thanks everyone!

I can relax a little more now, just have to write a huge list of all the things to take with us now... geez this is so different to how it used to be with just me and DH. Used to just chuck some things in a bag the night before... now its all such a production!! (wouldn't change it for the world though)
