    Default Teeth rubbing while feeding

Hi, I am feeding my 12 month old whose teeth seem to be resting on my breast while he is feeding. He isn't biting, it just seems that there is friction from the teeth when he is sucking. This is very painful and happened when I BF my eldest son. It became so painful then that I had to give up. We are both not ready to give up this time so if anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated.

    Hi there,

I don't know how long you tried for the first time, but with my DD it took about 2 weeks for my breasts to "toughen up" and for feeding to be comfortable again. She never bit me either, but it was the rubbing that was painful - those little razor sharp teeth! I know how you feel though, its just another thing that no one warns you about when you first start out .

    Good luck!

Teeth and breast shouldn't meet when there's good attachment. Many babies have to learn to attach again when their teeth arrive as the shape of their mouths changes. If it's hurting, or you're seeing teethmarks, take bub off the breast say "Big mouth!" and open your mouth wide to show them what you mean. Reattach keeping a careful eye out for the lips to be nicely curled back and make sure they have the biggest possible mouthful of breast. That should stop any attachment problems. If it continues, call your local ABA or get a lactation consultant. Bfing is too important to let something like teeth get in the way I feed a 2 yr old with a mouthful of fangs and although we've had the odd attachment issue as teeth have arrived I have no problems. It's totally possible

And Kimmy, have a look in the breastfeeding forum here to see how many links I've posted on preparing to bf. You can learn lots and get lots of support way before your baby arrives. I did and I've never had a single graze or problem with bf. It is possible

Yes thanks for that Janet. I now realise that my nipples didn't toughen up - but her attachment corrected. I had never even heard of this hapenning before either. So much to learn........!
