I am taking Blackmores Gold preg vitamins and the doctor said that i should also be taking iron tablets due to me being vegetarian. anyhow, they both have folic acid in them, is it too much???
can excess be rejected or does it not?

I'm a vego too and came back as low iron during the 1st trimester so now i take a pre-natal multi which has iron and folate and also take an extra iron tablet. You can get iron without folate if you are worried about too much folate, but from what I know extra folate is fine too.
Baby Seth came along on August 25th.

I dont think that too much folate is a problem. You will be ok

Have you actually been tested for low iron? Having extra suppliments wont hurt at all but I am sick of people assuming that vegetarians (yes I am one) have low iron and/or protein levels! We can get enough from non meat based sources.

Anyway sorry, had to rant, not at you but at those who assume we must not be healthy enough to get though pregnancy without supplaments.

i'm not vege but my gp and ob said that you get low iron levels during pg so they recommended the pg supp elevit which i've been taking for both pgs. The iron levels in this are fantastic, not to mention, calcium and folate (which you can never have too much of). I really like elevit because I get all my multi-vits & mins in one tablet as i don't really like taking tablets too much.
Other than eating a good balanced diet (which i am sure you do) and getting reg moderate excercise you'll be fine!
Best of luck and enjoy the pg journey - its great

    Nicole,
Yeah i have been tested, no it isnt 'too' low though being preg i have felt more tired and all that and the GP did recomend it...
i know all the stigma about being vege and being low this and low that!! i think that like everyone i have my bad days with food, i like to know that if i am havin a bad day that it wont deprive the growing alien in belly and that i wont feel really bad the next day!!!
might just take the iron every second day???

a really great iron supplement is floradix florvital. it is like a medicinal cordial made from different herbs and other things all natural.
it is a form of very abrorbable iron as some tablets can make you constipated.
I was totally vego until i craved fish too much during my pregnancy, and my iron started off great but decreased alot by the end so floradix dorted this out for me.

Women with a history of babies with NT defects are often prescribed folic acid in massive doses from 4,000 to 10,000mcg. Just check how many mcg are in each and add them together - anything below 1,500mcg is nothing to write home about. Folic acid is water soluble, so anything you body doesn't need you'll just pee out anyways. If you do take massive doses over a long period of time, it can cause problems and should be medically supervised, but not the amounts we are talking about here, so no need to worry.
