Different 2nd time around?

Hi

Has anyone else noticed that you do things different with your second baby? My second is only a week old but I have noticed I am doing things differently.

*When he cries, I dont jump straight away. With my daughter I used to pick her up as soon as she cried. With my son, I dont mind if he cries for a few minutes.

*I only have 2 dummies. One was in the car and I couldnt be bothered unlocking the house to go and get it. The other needed to be sterilised because my daughter had been playing with it. Because I was tired, I could be bothered to boil water for 5 minutes, so I just ran it under the tap for a little bit. I didnt end up giving it to him because he just woke for feeds last night but if it was my first baby I definately would have sterilised it.

Anyone else do things different second time around?

Yep Big Time!

With Bailey, Always Picked Up As Soon As Cried, Rocked To Sleep Until 7 Months Old Then Controlled Crying, Sterilised Everything, He Ate Mainly Bottled Baby Food, Bottle Feed From 5 Months, Spent Every Dotting Minute On Him.

Tyllee, Left To Cry Until Ready To Get Her, Haven't Sterilised Anything, Left To Put Self To Sleep From Birth, Except When Really Upset Although Very Close By, Controlled Crying At 6 Months, Home Made Food Everytime, Still Breastfeed At Nearly 7 Months, Gets Attention But Harder With 2 Year Old Brother.

Its Strange How We Do It, Because A Lot Of The Time I Don't Really Think About It, I Just Go With The Flow This Time Around. Last Time Was A Lot Of Stressing Out And Trying To Get Use To The Whole Thing.

It's funny I was better at letting my older son cry. When PJ was first born and would cry during the night or when Nat was having a sleep I would go straight to him so that he didn't wake Nat up.
But on all other counts I've been a lot more easy going with him.

Just less paranoid, more laid back, more able to take things as they come, and less worried about what other people thought or said.

It was much more enjoyable the second time around.

SOOOOOOOOOO Much more relaxed....Things seem so easy with no. 2. She sleeps great, she eats great, we all think she's great (even her big sis), heck second time 'round.......everything is great!!!

I was pretty laid back with DD1 but was petrified I was going to stab her with a nappy pin

or drop her in the bath

or something terrible like that (I hope everyone else had those fears with their first too). I was still holding her (and her bottle) to go to sleep at 12 months- DD2 has self settled since day one pretty much and is already trying to hold her own bottle - once it hits halfway it is light enough for her to hold herself. DD1 wasn't into eating but I think it was more because I was nervous about it rather than she didn't want to - with DD2 I just shovel it in and she lurves her food!!

I guess some things are just easier the more times you do them!!

I think we do things differently due to #2 being such a haapy laid back boy!!! Our daughter still to this day is hard work!! but oh so worth it!! I stopped sterilising the dummy with dd after a few mnths and only did it at birth for ds, I forget I couldnt imagine having to bottle feed I would have screaming kids as i would forget to take the darn things!!!

I read somewhere (and this is a joke, not meant to be serious.....!):

With the first baby, when he drops the dummy, you boil it for 5 minutes.

With the second baby, when he drops the dummy, you wipe it off on your shirt.

With the third baby, when he drops the dummy, you get the dog to lick it clean.

Absolutely, it is sooooooo different!

Mainly because you have less time to worry about those silly "little" things and also because you have "done it all before" so you don't have to be so pedantic.

With the first you are going by what other's have told you, so you are treading in the dark a little, but with the 2nd you have done it all before, so you can cut corner's

That said, my two were entirely different babies, #1 was very laid back, slept alot and was "easy", so #2 was a bit of a shock to the system (or as my MIL puts it he was "normal", its #1 that was unusually good) - not in a bad way, was just a shocker of a sleeper! So that took a bit of getting used to!

This is so me with DS #2 !!

Just so much more relaxed about everything, its so nice

I am alot different his time around, relaxed in some ways but not in others. I am more confident in what i'm doing and can sense things alot better, and alot more laid back about things that would have bothered me the first time.

Like if DD2 vomits a bit of milk back up, i don't worry about it as long as its not much, the first time i would have worried what was wrong with her!

Easier and yet harder too......especially with an older one to keep an eye on as well.....
