    Smile Our little boy Lachlan

After 7 weeks I am only now getting around to posting the story of Lachlan's birth.

As Lachlan was showing signs of being a big baby my obstetrician didn't want me to go beyond the 40 week mark so she scheduled me to be induced three days early. On Wednesday 22 November we arrived at Sunnybank Private at 7am to start the induction process. I was 1cm dilated so they applied Prostoglandin gel to the cervix to begin the dilation process. At 1pm I was 2.5cm and my waters were broken. Contractions began pretty quickly and I requested an epidural and a catheter was inserted. By 5pm I had dilated to 4cm and was 9cm by 9pm. Around 10pm the epidural was turned off to get some sensation back in my legs in order to start pushing. At 11pm when I was 10cm I started pushing but I seriously underestimated how hard I had to push. Only one in three pushes was being effective and around midnight when Lachlan was out as far as his nose, the midwife and obstetrician started talking about using alternative ways to deliver him. In my state of mind I thought they meant by caesarean (which of course couldn't happen considering he was halfway out!) but they were actually talking about using forceps. That got me motivated once again and after being put in stirrups - which were the best things for me as I could grip onto something firm - and having an episiotomy, Lachlan Andrew was delivered shortly afterwards at 12:20am on Thursday 23 November.

During the final stages of delivery the cord got loosely wrapped around his neck and body so the doctor got the cord quickly and he was given some oxygen just in case but everything was fine and we couldn't believe our little boy had finally arrived.

I was sick five times throughout the labour - don't know if it was hormones or the epidural - but my husband got to spend a lot of time cuddling Lachlan soon after his birth as I was so sick. We were amazed at how alert he was looking around at the world for the first time.

Everything has gone so well for us at home over the last seven weeks and we are so blessed and lucky to have such a perfect little boy in our lives.

Thanks for sharing, also great name! I named my son (born in May '06) Lachlan Andrew as well. They seem to go together very well. Did you look at him and know straight away that he was a Lachlan?
