Underweight baby anyone??

Does anyone have an underweight baby? My DS is 14 months and rather underweight according to the birth charts. He is though extremely active, alert, noisey, very healthy and developing.

He has been to a paed to get it checked out and the guy said he is very obviously health, there is nothing at all wrong with him.

I am sick to death of people asking me what he weighs and then saying "oh he doesn't look THAT light" or "oh well, he will catch up later" or other such things that make me think there is something wrong with him that I cant see. Im now at the point where I have a couple of friend who when they get their babies weighed, they ask me what my DS is so they can compare!! and when they find out there babies are XX heavier than my DS they are comforted by this It drives me nuts!

Does anyone else get this?

Yeah, my Millar is only 9 kilos at 17 months! I have never taken him to a CHN or anything because I know what they will say He started walking early and is extremely active (this is encouraged by his rather boisterous 5 year old brother lol). He literally never stops moving lol and he's still breastfed. Developmentally he is perfect so I am not worried. If anyone ever says anthing I just say "Yeah, its great he's so easy to carry" and this normally turns the tone of the conversation into a positive light

As long as you know he's healthy thats all that matters. People will always find something to comment about

My son was underweight and underheight (according to that stuffing growth chart!) from the very beginning and at 2 3/4 - we are still receiving comments from all and sundry. I normally respond with "he is who he is".

I think it's funny that some parents wear their children's weight like a badge.

I also find it quite curious that it's ok for someone to say to you "Oh my lord, he's so small/skinny/little" when society deems it unacceptable for you to retort with "What a whopper, holy dooly, what do you feed that kid?". The normal range in toddlers for both height and weight is vast.

As long as your son is putting on weight and eating a range of foods ... there's nothing to worry about.

Oh - and hide the growth chart!

DD is also small and light for her age. But we don't get comments on it, or if we do they're more along the lines of "oh isn't she so cute". I think it's more acceptable for girls to be small and cute, but boys are supposed to be bruisers? Stupid in my opinion.

I've never had to deal with negative comments so don't know what to suggest. Except you obviously are raising happy healthy boys so take some refuge in that. If either you or their dad is on the tall/skinny side then you could perhaps point that out to critics, in a nice way, like "yeah, he sure takes after me/his dad being so slim".

Just read Supermum's post and had to laugh at this "What a whopper, holy dooly, what do you feed that kid?". That would sure put a few of the critics in their place.!
