    Question What sort of dog????

we are lookin at getting a dog as a lil play mate for Tyler to grow up with. So I have a few questions for those of you who hav lil bubs and dogs.
Tyler is 3 months old too.
Do I get a pup that will grow with him or do we get a dog that is a year or so old?
What breeds of dogs are good with kids?... and I'm not keen on big dogs.
I would prefer a littler one that doesn't take a lot of brushing and walking, isn't known for lots of yapping. I'd also prefer a softer one too... not that I am fussy. lol
    Thanks in advance girls

IMO all little dogs are yappy - esp terriers (ours is a pain in the butt, she is a complete psycho - but totally adore her!)

Staffys are great with kids. Beautiful dogs. but all dogs will need walking and time spent with them for training, especially as the dog will be around a child. So bear that in mind... its not really a matter of just getting a dog and putting it in the backyard and relying on the breed to make sure it has a nice temperament and is well behaved.

This website might help you choose a good breed...

you just put in your preferences and it guides you as to what breeds would be suitable.

Sorry if I sounded a bit harsh

i grew up with a few dogs. up till i was about 7 my mum had a lassie dog and i loved it but he died he was great with kids but needed lots of brushing. and i mean lots! lol
my brother had kelpie and it was a nut that wouldnt sit still lol he died of cancer after my bro had him for 2 yrs
we also had a cocker spaniel cross with a **** zu and he was a grouch but i think that was coz of his age more then his breed.
my mum had a chiwowha(sp?)cross with a fox terrier and he adored kids and wasnt a yapper more of i'll come lick ya hand dog lol he was very protective of my mum and us kids lol but he died of epiperleptic(sp?) fit.
my mum has a pure breed chiwowha now and he is great with my ds's he is a bit scared of dp and ds1 it takes him a while to warm up to new people its taken dp 2 years to get my mums dog to accept treats off him lol
anywya i think it doesnt matter hwat breed you get as long as you take your lifestyle, how much excersise ou are prepared to give a dog and size of backyard etc.

    Default doggies

Pets and kids are hard, If you're looking for a great dog what about a dalmatian? Or a german shoirt haired pointer? I have a dally and a liver coloured pointer at home and they are awesome... but as you can tell i'm a bit biased! My bub is due in March 2007 so i've been exposing the doggies to a cd so they can get used to baby noises. From past experience they are good with kids (they have been trained not to jump up on people) and love playing fetch.
German short haired pointers have very soft mouths as they are trained to pick up birds and have short easy to maintain coats.
My Dally is very food motivated (easy to train!!) and a lovely girl - she isn't scatty at all and is a great medium size dog very cute too - kids love dallys because of disney!
Newbie first time mumma from Mildura Vic, Bubba due March 12th 2007 & Hubby & I can't wait for new arrival

    Thanks girls!!
We has numerous dogs when we were kids... but I don't remember much about them...
MIL has a maltese and I love these but they are very yappy so it sort of turned me off....
I will walk it everyday... but I just don't want a dog where I have to walk it 4 times a day.. lol
I don't have any problem training it and teaching it things... but I have heard that there are certain breeds that don't get on with kids and I just want to stay clear of them...
DF actually wants a husky.... but I had a Sheltie as a kid and so I know all about brushing them.... and I know I will get stuck brushing it.... and walking it numerous times a day... and I'm not sure about their temperment... I think they would snap as they are part wolf.
Thanks for the website!! I will check it out!!

    Hi,
I am a vet nurse and also used to teach puppy preschool before i had my daughter, I have an alaskan malamute who is great with kids but they are alot of work grooming wise and need strict training as pups, so does a husky so not the best if you dont want to groom, every one will have a negative story to tell you about whatever breed you choose, i would recommend getting a pup if you get an older dog you may be taking on behavioural probelms and they are harder to change once the dog is older, I strongly recommend puppy preschool and obeidience training after this ,no matter what breed you choose. Alot of the small breeds do require alot of grooming such as maltese, shihtzu etc, chihuahua's are okay if you train them right and if you train any dog right you can stop them yapping, most bad behaviour in dogs is due to how we respond to behaviour when they are a pup. Hope this helps, good luck with your choice
