Default How popular is too popular?

How popular do you think is too popular for a baby name? There's a name DH and I both really like, but it's in the top 50 Australian baby names for 2015.

We just don't want the child to end up being one of seven children with the same name in their class, if that makes sense. In the same token, I grew up with an odd name for somebody my age (never actually met another who is aged under 50 haha), and I hated it. So I don't want something so unpopular that no one has heard of it for over 40 years either.

    Thanks for any insight!

If you don't want too popular just steer clear of top 10 I'd say.

Honestly, it would not bother me if I liked the name.

Even if it is 'most popular' your area may have none!

How high on the list? (Top or bottom half)

It's well and truly bottom half. I am having trouble conceptualising just how many kids would have to be given the same name that year in order to make it onto the list. I wish they told you numbers as well as rankings lol.

Yeah I think you're good if it's out of the top 10, esp if it's out of top 20 👍🏻 (SO busting to know what you're having!)

    I'm definitely having a baby

Seriously though, I'm busting to tell people! I can't wait until the 20 week scan so I'm allowed to haha!

One of my kids has a top ten name...never had to share it with anyone in class/school year/sports etc. even though it was number 2 or 3 the year they were born. One of my friend's avoided anything in the top 100 and in the end made up the name for one of their kids to ensure they'd be the only one with that name....and just so happen to be in the same class as a child with the exact same name.
So, my thoughts are go with what you love and don't worry about where it sits in the charts.

I was 1 of 5 Amy's in my year group at high school, I hated that I had to be referred to by my full name all the time, it was annoying growing up, so my kids names are 'easy normal' names but not popular now... we have Myles & Bridget... now to think of a 3rd that fits the criteria!

A top 10 name 30 years ago is not like a top 10 name nowadays.
Purely because of the larger amount of names to chose from, being in top 100 now is a much smaller number. If that makes sense. I think the days of being one of 8 Jessica's (that's me!) are mostly gone.
