It will often depend on the type of matter it is I guess. If the matter is one that the union is keen to pursue on a larger scale (ie: it is an issue with some significance to a lot of workers) the union may assist. Many union members only join in the middle of a dispute and I can tell you that is one of the most frustrating thing for unions, given that it is the members who have been around for years who have built the union up, paid their dues, have fought for the collective entitlements that others benefit from, and along comes someone who has a problem at work, joins the union and expects the union to come in all guns blazing to help! (By the way OP I not suggesting this is you, just a hypothetical new union member).

OP by all means join a union- I am as pro-union as they come! I just caution you that they may not be able to assist in the way they might assist a member who has been around for some time. And for what it's worth, I support that. (Sorry I've taken this thread slightly off topic).

Yes what @TreeGirl said. The union may assist you or they may not. I know of two separate colleagues who joined the union when having issues and needing assistance. Both times the union refused to step in or help as it started before they were members.
(And yes I am in a union).

Mind you you shouldn't need a union to fight this for you. You are entitled to LSL so keep persisting. Good luck!!!

Yes, they do. You just have to make your own enquiries. Don't ask management! Contact the ACTU and they'll assist with which union is appropriate for your type of work. What jobs are you thinking of that don't have access to a union?
