Keep replying out loud "surely they can't call @Sonja racist or xenophobic?!"

Sonia though, classic definition of a xenophobic person. It's an easy trap to fall in but I expect more from public figures.

I'm not saying I'm perfect but I consider myself to be extremely tolerant and accepting of people. In my profession, I meet people from all walks of life, from different socioeconomic backgrounds, different ages, religions, cultures, abilities. And I can instantly build a rapport with any one of them because I don't consider them beneath me or above me, and I love learning about people's lives and backgrounds and interests. So to answer your question, no I don't have bigoted thoughts and fears. I doubt I ever had any, as an adult at least.

Yes I have fears. And yes I realise there are people out there who are fanatics and see me as the enemy and would want to kill me if they had the chance. But it doesn't make me live in fear, and it certainly doesn't make me want to support a discriminatory immigration policy in the hopes that it would stop someone immigrating to this country for the sole purpose of carrying out a terrorist attack. The thought of this happening just seems absolutely nonsensical to me.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, people don't immigrate to another country Unless they are looking for a better quality of life, and greater opportunities for success and happiness. The sort of radicals you are fearing are ALREADY here, and they are only going to increase in numbers when they are made to feel disconnected from society, discriminated against and hated.

And don't you think the people who apply for immigration/visas have stringent background checks done on them?

You do realise there are rapists and murderers in Australia right? Not specifically Muslim rapists and murders, just your typical white murderer and rapist.

It is not a phenomenon unique to people with dark skin.

    Just saying.

We are worried about rapists and murderes and pedophiles. But these guys are radicalised religious fundamentalists, this is a whole new bag of fish.

I think if Sonia had said this in a private group instead of on television, you PC nazis would be less judgemental and probably more empathetic... Just saying.

Nah nope. I have had people say things like this in a private setting and it still makes me angry.

ETA resorting to calling people who don't like racism and vitriol nazis? Classy

Why does it make you angry? Which part of it makes you angry?

Can you discern the difference between garden variety racism and fear?

    I suggest watching Gandhi ...

Is it PC to speak out against discrimination now?

And I was responding to your comment about the raping and killing in the Middle East and Africa coming to Australia, which just sounded ridiculous. Sorry.

If anything, I think the more immigration to this country, the better. We need to dilute the population of the colonialists who committed genocide, raped and kidnapped the native people of this land and populated it with convicts.

    Just saying!

Do I understand? No, quite frankly. What on earth are you talking about? Where to even start with this?

"the extremist hide under a 'cover' of Islam"

"...her fear that one could come in under 'Muslim' but have completely destructive agenda and do something that could potentially hurt a lot of people."

Are you saying people pretend to be Muslim? And that that will help them immigrate somehow?

"It's not that she has anything against the majority of Muslim people who do good..." - well, yes it is. Saying no more Muslim immigration means discriminating against that vast majority of Muslim people!

And the idea that extremism always comes from the outside? I don't think so. (Can't be bothered Googling anything about this - but lots of home-grown nutters overseas lately.)

All religions have nutters. Wesboro Baptist Church, anyone? No 'religion of peace' there. [Ps - not knocking the whole Christian religion there - just pointing out that there are fringe elements even in the religions most of us know lots about.]

Seriously? Ok I'll bite. What makes me angry is I have worked in immigration legal centres and I intimately understand the rights these people have at law and under UN conventions. I understand why the fear is baseless. I understand why more is achieved through love and not hate. I understand non violent protests. I understand many things about this.

What makes me angry is that when I try and politely explain why these fears and the hatred of Muslims is unfounded, and just turning them away is illegal, I get shouted down.

Why do you want me to watch Gandhi? what point are you wanting to make but can't without resorting to statements like that?

And please don't call me a nazi again. I think you may find that one of the most offensive things I've read.
