Default Tell me about your ADHD child..

How old was your child when they were diagnosed with ADHD? Can you tell me more about it and how you discipline them?

Does diagnosis take a long time? Do they do it at a particular age?

No not a long time. Just a few appointments with a pead and a few other specialists. (Wait was the public c waiting times to see them)
Any age normal over 4 but it can be before.
Ds1 is on meds and has been for 7 years. (Best thing we ever did)
Ds2 isn't. Doesn't need them. Is currently in ot therapy.

Edited to add I knew in my heart from a newborn that Ds2 had it but we were managing it on until last year. When we got his formal diagnosis to get public ot help.

Not mine, but a child I work with (in care, so essentially in a parental role). We manage rather than discipline. He's 9. We keep him as active as possible. Give him jobs to do, let him talk to us constantly, play games etc. Strict routine. Clear house rules that everyone follows. Medication before bed to help him sleep. If he starts getting heightened, we point out natural consequences and praise good choices. It helps to know his triggers. If he damages property, then his pocket money goes towards replacement costs. Treats (going to the footy, getting new toys etc.) depend on his behaviour.

He has 2 carers active 24/7though...not practical in a family environment.
